British liner Athenia sunk off Scotland coast
Forty four feared dead after the British liner Athenia was torpedoed and shelled by a submarine west of Scotland. Of 1418 aboard, 1387 were rescued by Sunday night, including 311 Americans. Survivors dispute German claims a mine caused the disaster. Captain James Cook of the City of Flint reported the submarine surfaced and shelled the vessel after the torpedo.

Sheepherder Burns to Death in Cabin Near Craig
John Anders, 55 to 60, a Beartooth ranch sheep herder, died in a cabin fire on the Beartooth ranch near Craig. The blaze started from a cabin stove fire and grew into a forest fire covering about 800 acres. A dog also died in the cabin. Anders had moved from Wyoming last March and worked for Jim McGregor. he was described as of Polish descent.

Patrolman shoots escaped prisoner in Hysham jail break
Talton Byrd, 35, a Black man, was killed by State Highway Patrolman D A Hunter during a jail escape attempt at Hysham. Byrd and his companion escaped after assaulting Treasure County Undersheriff W E Williamson.
