Boulder Valley correspondent Barbara Schilling reports fall conditions and notes some teams will be new as the season opens. The game remains the same but changes loom with Page 3 coverage and a related column.
A benefit dance to fund surgery for 15 year old Boyd A. Peterson will start at 9 p.m. Saturday at the Four Winds Inn. Peterson, son of Eugene and Mrs. Peterson, was hurt August 20 when his motorcycle left the road and he was thrown into a barrow pit. He has been paralyzed from the mid chest since, with seven thoracic vertebrae injuries and multiple fractures. Doctors planned a surgery to restore function, but success is not guaranteed. the family hopes the procedure will prevent permanent paralysis.
Sweet Grass High School Sheepherders prepare for Friday’s home football opener at 7 30 p m against the Manhattan Tigers. Coach Bob Hauck notes a three home game slate and a real conference meet this week with Manhattan built on 16 lettermen. He cites depth and speed concerns while naming a tentative starting lineup and listing team members across seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen along with staff and managers.
Sweet Grass County Commissioners set the 1974-75 school levies to begin tax form prep for fall collection. Delays in Reed Point districts held up some levies, so only disputed-area estimates were approved to speed the process. District and county levies are listed with mills for elementary and high school funds, transportation, and retirement. Reed Point High School district 35.57 mills. Sweet Grass High School district 22.58 mills.
County Superintendent Edith Harper reports 67 students are enrolled across four rural schools this year, two fewer than last year. Breakdown shows McLeod 17, Bridge 11, Melville 17, and Greg Cliff 22 students.
A meeting is set for Sept 11 at the Moose Lodge to elect officers and reorganize the Sweet Grass County TV Booster group. The booster, formed years ago, financed two translators to rebroadcast Billings stations to Big Timber and surrounding areas but faces unpaid dues and failing equipment.
Sweet Grass County 4 H members win ribbons across multiple clubs. Big Timber Creek and Crazy Mountain entries claim blue and red awards in livestock, cookies, crafts, and dress categories. Otter Creek shows lambs and horsemanship blue ribbons amid diverse showing events.
