From Minneapolis Crest returned last Wednesday from a vacation visit in Minneapolis. He was accompanied home by his brother Oswald Crest who will visit relatives here.
Helena Montana patrol supervisor Charles L. Sheridan urges motorists to ready vehicles for winter by inspecting lights battery heater wipers and defrosters. He notes poor visibility and traction drive most winter accidents and recommends tire chains good brakes and slowing to match conditions.
Paul Nyre was elected president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce at the Big Timber cafe meeting last Monday evening. George Ward became first vice president, Howard Forsythe second vice president, Fr. P. C. Wolframski secretary, and Orvin Flare treasurer. Officers take office immediately with meetings moving to the fire hall.
The last meeting of the Young Adult class at the E U B church was hosted by Mrs. Jimmy Faw and Mrs. Henry Sandsness. Mrs. Henry McCauley presided, with Mrs. Violet McCauley leading the devotional. Games followed and lunch was served. Attendees included Mrs. Oscar McLane Mrs. Howard Huyser Mrs. Elsie Jones Mrs. Paul Frazee Mrs. Vernie Hathaway Mrs. Cecil Valgamore Mrs. George Lamach Mrs. Jim Bourne Jr. Mrs. Everal Wines Mrs. McLean Clark and Miss Jean Faw.
Elaine B. Boyd of Big Timber and Rev. Harry B. Lane of Consul Sask came together in marriage at a family home ceremony Wed nesday at four. The Rev. Glenn Clark officiated with attendants Mrs. Ralph Porter and Donald Boyd. Out of town guests included Mrs. C. P. Savchenko Miss Pearl Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Porter of Bozeman.
Two late arriving hunters on the second day of deer season spotted smoke from a cabin at Bob Langston place. They found roof shingles burning near fuel, put out the blaze, and noticed three county cars downwind. Had they arrived 15 minutes later the fire could have spread to dry leaves and grass.
Deputy Game Warden John F. Burke reminds hunters that the migratory bird season ends tonight October 21 with pheasant season October 31 to November 11 and a bag limit of three cock birds. Pheasant hunting hours run to 5. Red clothing is required by state law and violators may be arrested. Burke arrested Walter A. Krumenacker of Billings for failing to wear red, posting a $5 bond with Justice J. D. Holly.
The Big Timber sheriff reports a spike in auto crashes at the Mc Leod and Highway 10 intersection since the blinkers were installed. In two weeks two collisions occurred, involving drivers Jack Trimble, Chas Denham, Robert Phillips, Mrs Roy Carter, and Frank Boice, with damages ranging from 25 to 200 dollars. A hit and run damaged Chas Officer’s parked car on Fourth Avenue West.
Jim Robbins, about 1 year old, son of Mr. and Mrs. J Q Robbins, broke a left arm and leg when he slipped while crawling down a rock ledge during a deer hunt in the Natural Bridge area. He was taken to St Vincent's hospital in Billings after emergency care in Big Timber.
Republican U S Senate hopeful Tom J. Davis spoke in Bozeman and other towns warning that tax burdens fall on average workers. He attacked the New Deal as wasteful, praised budget balance achievements, and tied Dewey’s election to national unity and a rebuke of Truman era class politics.
Ben S Lavold, 88, longtime Otter Creek rancher, died at his home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at Big Timber Lutheran church at 1 30 Sunday afternoon with burial in Melville Cemetery.
Livingston county officials plan to file grand larceny information in district court against Ace Anderson James E Wall and Donald Edward Meloche suspects in the theft of five horses in the area in recent days All horses stolen Oct 6 were recovered ownership identified and officers say the men also broke into a cabin taking assorted items A saddle bag containing fresh meat found with the suspects is believed to be from a calf killed in Boulder county
Mrs. D. L. White president of the Associated Women Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau requests members to pick a local speaker for a Farm Bureau speaking contest. Topics include Farm Bureau a Family Organization Farm Bureau A Voice for Agriculture and Farm Bureau Past Present and Future. Prizes are $25 $15 and $10.
Larry Joe Salmonson five year old son of Mr and Mrs BE Salmonson escaped serious injury last Friday when he fell under the wheels of a slowly backing light passenger car driven by Mrs J D Herries in front of the post office on McLeod Street. He suffered only bruises and is rapidly recovering due to the car moving slowly.
Walt Laughfranere, 25, of Savage, was accidentally shot and killed at Eagle creek in the Jar dine area. Leland Lapp fired after hearing a noise, mistaking Laughfranere for a deer, and the fatal shot occurred 1 hour 45 minutes after the season opened. Laughfranere was part of a six hunter party from Savage. the shooter found the body after the shot.
Ladies Aid of Big Timber heard Mrs. E H B Helgeson from Billings, circuit president of the W M F, as guest speaker. Devotions led by Mrs. E E Tollefson. solos by Sigrid Tollefson and Mrs. Bill Ellison. Hostesses included Mrs. Kenneth Boe Joe Weamer and Mrs. George Hauge. Unreturned mission boxes may go to Mrs Dean Lowry or Mrs Harold Boe. Bazaar and food sale set for parish hall on Saturday Nov 18.
