Montana enforces a strict drunken driving law, chapter 129 of the 1937 session laws, that suspends licenses immediately and requires a bond of at least 1250 with real estate security. The bond must be signed by two property owners and approved by a district judge, making it difficult for convicts to regain driving rights.
Clarence B. Young a 34 year old owner of mining claims near Whitehall died after an auto accident at Colorado and Second Street in Butte. His wife Lila Young 32 was seriously injured and Andrew Keine 51 suffered shock. The Packard coupe left the road, overturned, and all three were thrown clear. Young died ten minutes after reaching St James hospital. Mrs Young had multiple injuries including a fractured nose and severe facial lacerations. Keina recovered from bruises.
New York defeated Chicago 3 to 1 yesterday and 6 to 3 today. The series continues in New York with two games, then a return to Chicago if New York has not won four by that point.
Treasury data show a $700,983,352 deficit for the first quarter of the fiscal year begun July 1. Expenditures under emergency spending reached $2,210,165,385 while receipts totaled $1,509,182,032.55. WPA costs rose to $559,333,347 from $333,926,213 a year earlier.
Saratoga Springs N Y Sept 29 The Republican state convention nominated Thomas E Dewey Manhattan district attorney for governor by acclamation in a tumultuous demonstration today Delegates adopted a 19 plank platform condemning the alliance between the underworld and certain forms of politics The party has not controlled the state government since 1922 and will rely on Dewey s record as a rackets prosecutor
President Roosevelt proposed government reorganization as a remedy for the work jam in Washington agencies. He told reporters that overtime and backlogs exist, and Congress must decide agency functions and staffing levels to eliminate duplication and improve efficiency.
London reports Prime Minister Chamberlain praised President Roosevelt for influencing Munich talks that averted war. Chamberlain announced a 10,090,000 pound loan for dismembered Czechoslovakia, while denouncing critics and hailing the Munich pact and Allied leaders Mussolini and Hitler.
Josephine Morstein Gottlob born 1857 in Netolice Czechoslovakia married Frank Gottlob in 1879 then moved to Montana in 1883 settling at Grey Cliff before relocating to Sweet Grass. She died October 1 after six years of illness. Funeral Monday at the Evangelical church with Elder J L McConaughey presiding. She is survived by nine children six living 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Two Democrats Burke of Nebraska and Lewis of Illinois urged President Roosevelt to summon international conferences for lasting European peace. Burke, recently returning from Europe, favors an economic readjustment and trade barriers removal while Lewis, an admin ally, called for a Versailles treaty review in an American setting to chart a path to world peace and fair colony disposition.
Defense motion for a new trial for Lee Simpson, found guilty of first degree murder on September 23, was denied by Judge William L. Ford in Ryegate district court. Simpson was sentenced to hang November 1, with a December 1 deadline to file the bill of exceptions and potential appeal to the state supreme court. If the supreme court upholds the verdict, execution may be delayed to March. trial date for Mrs. Simpson, charged in the same deputy sheriff Arthur Burford slaying, postponed indefinitely.
In Rochester New York Governor Herbert Lehman won renomination by Democrats to head the ticket with President Roosevelt’s praise. The slate includes U S Senator Robert Wagner Rev James Mead Mrs Caroline O Day and Matthew Merritt with Roosevelt发送 telegram of support as Lehman begins campaign.
In Chico California on October 2 194? Ralph Blasingame 43 dies when a car driven by Clarence Rist 41 crashes into a moving freight train at a crossing. His sister Mrs Harry Ballew was killed four years earlier and his twin Harris Blasingame was fatally injured in a crash two years prior. Ralph had said he expected to die similarly but avoided cars until this morning. Rist is severely injured.
Senator Smith of South Carolina warned Secretary Wallace that the Roosevelt farm program risks serious jeopardy unless cotton aid is expanded. The Agriculture Department loosened wheat loan rules to allow collateral switches to higher quality wheat, while Smith led criticism at a Capitol conference and pledged a December committee session to draft a new farm program.
The Montana Standard reports federal emergency funds totaling about 300 million dollars allocated to Montana since 1933. WPA PWA FERA CWA CCC and social security payments form the bulk, with county distributions totaling about 15.78 million by June 30, 1938. Silver Bow led county benefits at 14.48 million. Dawson had the highest per-family average, while Petroleum had the lowest.
In Union City New Jersey October 2 a hostile crowd pelted the building with stones and shouted anti Nazi phrases as Fritz Kuhn national leader of the Volksbund was escorted away by Police Commissioner Harry E Little after two entry attempts. He left after officials warned of possible bloodshed as residents opposed the event.
Washington reports the administration is studying subsidies for cotton manufacturers who agree to produce goods for sale at reduced prices to aid relief and low income families. Officials argue boosted cotton use is needed to ease the South’s farm problem after failed production control programs and growing demand from southern senators for loans or subsidies.
Army engineers said there was no apparent cause for further earth movements at Fort Peck dam and noted extensive explorations are underway. Eight men died when a 2000 foot section of the upstream face slid into the lake last week, with a report on findings not yet available.
