In White Sulphur Springs area Bear In Orbit Loggers devised a method to deter a persistent black bear. The bear climbed a favored tree near the camp, so loggers attached a rope to the tree and to a tractor. When the tree toppled the bear was hurled about 150 feet and did not return.
Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau at its annual meeting opposed redistricting and urged a constitutional amendment to preserve rural representation against a Supreme Court plan. Resolutions also called for Congress to consider each bill on its own merit, avoiding combined bills like a wheat cotton measure. Sent to the state convention in Sidney in November. Buford Roce spoke.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation says American hunters contribute heavily to the economy, spending about $1.3 billion annually in remote areas. In 1963 hunter travel by car covered 4.78 billion miles, consuming 300 million gallons of gas and about $143 million in car costs, with substantial spending on lodging, transportation, clothing, ammo, and equipment.
1963 IFYE delegate Gary Giesick spent time in Big Timber giving talks and slides. He concluded his engagements Thursday evening at the Legion hall.
Officers for the ensuing year were installed Monday night at the Moose Home by Women of the Moose. The Big Timber Rifle and Pistol club will hold a hunter safety course starting Monday in the high school gym basement. Open to anyone turning 12 by opening of hunting season, with adults welcome. The Fish and Game commission supplies materials while George Damasco directs the instruction at the rifle range Monday evening.
Absarokee Huskies shut out the favored Big Timber Herders 12 to 0 on Friday. Eldon Anthun and Tim Schaff produced the opening TD and Jack Lannen added a 17 yard scoring pass. Big Timber struggled offensively and injuries hit the Herders with Tom Simmons sidelined. The Huskies next face Forsyth and the Dogies on the road.
Two Big Timber artists were invited to exhibit paintings at the Museum of the Plains Indians Browning during summer. Mrs. Virgil Broughton nee Doris Fogler and Helen McAuslan display works titled Crow Shaman Indian Winter Camp and Crow Indians Moving Camp.
The Herder freshman and sophomores will travel to Belgrade this Saturday October 3 to play a morning game at 10 30 against the Belgrade reserves.
Waterfowl season begins Sunday at sunrise east of the Continental Divide with a 7 percent day reprieve for west side ducks and geese not opening until noon October 11 east of the divide. After opening, shooting hours are sunrise to sunset and shotguns must be plugged to allow no more than three shots between reloads. At least one wing with feathers must remain attached to field dressed waterfowl.
Red Cross Bloodmobile targets 45 pints for Sweet Grass County with 10 am to 1 pm service at Legion Hall. Donors aged 21 to 60 over 110 pounds or under 18 with parental consent qualify. prior turnout was 21, with organizers urging pre-appointment calls to local coordinators.
Mr and Mrs Bill Cole hosted 23 guests Saturday evening at a treasure hunt with Bud Jordan as the finder Mr and Mrs Jordan of Wisall were overnight guests. Handy Construction of Billings began work last week on the Sweet Grass County Rest Home with Western Plumbing of Livingston as the plumbing contractor local suppliers and laborers are being engaged to maximize participation in the project.
A roundup of community notices from Big Timber includes visits by Ray Elgen and family to Butte, sorority pledges at the Missoula university with Margaret Lavold joining Delta Gamma, and several local incidents. A range fire west of Big Timber, a railroad ties blaze near Stephens Auto Service, vandalism at Bieber Feed and Grain, and a notable steak fry hosted by the Legion are among weekend events. Also covered are injuries to LaVern Duncan, visitors from Spokane and Chicago, travel notes, and a birthday reunion for C F Ullman with relatives from Billings Rothiemay Worland and other towns attending.
The Junior Pilgrim Fellowship of the Congregational Church conducts its 15th annual White Cane drive for the Montana Association for the Blind on a Saturday. Funds fund a five week summer school for Montana's adult blind at Montana State College offering skills from braille to daily living with an average 1964 cost of 339 dollars per student.
Gov Tim Babcock led a Republican campaign caravan through Big Timber to rally support for statewide offices in the November election. Speakers included U S Senate candidate Alex Blewett and several Montana incumbents outlining contrasts with Democrats and urging continued growth and state leadership.
Chuck Nicholson represented American Legion Post No. 19 at the national convention in Dallas September 21 to 25. Montanan Pat Kelly and wife Betty attended as state commander and state auxiliary president, with Mr. and Mrs. Neil Sheppard of Chester. They were invited to a Big Timber steak fry at the Legion hall, hosted Saturday evening for visiting Montanans en route home.
George Myers foreman of the Burke Holder ranch on Lower Deer Creek remains in Billings hospital after an accidental gunshot wound. The pistol buckled from its holster while he attempted to shoot a sick cow, the bullet grazing his stomach and one lung. he underwent surgery Tuesday following days of observation.
Norman Starr has purchased the Ford Agency from Everett Charlson and taken over garage management. He keeps current personnel with Ben Berg as office manager, Bill Kinsey as sales manager, and Louis Taylor, Ervin Yost, Gordon Huyser, Chuck Boe in maintenance. Jan Johnson stays as secretary. Plans are undecided pending the sale of Starrs Laurel property. Starr children attend Laurel elementary.
