A May 18 storm with 40 mph winds toppled a tent pole and toppled the canvas at Ringling Brothers circus in Washington. A 13 year old girl from Shenandoah Virginia, Betty Lee Roudabush, died from the collapse as 16 000 spectators panicked inside the big top. Water poured through the tent as crowds fled overturned seating and sought safety amid thunder and lightning.

Missouri Convicts Killed in Prison Stabbing
Two Missouri state penitentiary inmates were stabbed to death on the prison recreational field Sunday in front of about 3000 spectators. Roy Whipkey, 24, a robber from St. Louis, said he acted in self defense as the victims attacked him. The dead are William O'Hara, 35, jailed 14 years for robbery, and James D. Griffin, 21, serving 10 years for robbery. Whipkey claimed O'Hara provoked him by taunting over his guilty plea.
