The Pioneer presents census figures tracing Montana's rise from 20,595 in 1870 to 39,158 in 1880 and 132,159 in 1890. 343,329 in 1900, with estimates around 350,000 to 400,000 as the current count approaches.
H J Horn once with the Northern Pacific rises through engineering, division superintendent, and general manager to be named assistant general manager of the Burlington with Omaha headquarters. He left the mercantile business two years ago and now resumes high executive duties.
Friends learn of the serious illness of County Attorney Vaughan as he cannot appear in Whalen vs Northern Pacific. Judge Henry adjourns Sweet Grass district court to June 14 due to his condition. Vaughan is reported to be suffering from typhoid pneumonia.
A government highway expert, Mr Voshell, may supervise the expenditure for improving Second Avenue East to the county road near Yellowstone. The engineer has agreed to visit Billings at no local cost, with expenses covered by the government. Washington must assign him to duty here, date to be set once approval arrives.
Washington dispatch reports Senator Carter’s irrigation certificate bill is blocked in the house Ways and Means Committee with unexpected opposition. Carter reportedly will attach the measure as an amendment to the public land withdrawal bill in the senate. Proposals to replace certificates with bonds are deemed futile and harmful to the bill.
Spokane announces prize-winning fruit from the third annual exposition in Spokane will travel to Chicago for exhibition during the International Livestock Exposition week at First Regiment armory. Displays from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana will accompany the fruit with railroads covering much of the costs and growers contributing space.
The list, dated April 20 1910, covers lands subject to entry under the Enlarged Homestead Act of Feb 19 1909. Most are in Sweet Grass county with others across the line in Yellowstone. The act allows filings on about 315000 additional acres, letting settlers claim a half section (320 acres) instead of a quarter (160). Many entries will be supplemented to obtain full half sections. influx of settlers to Big Timber area is anticipated.
The Pioneer outlines the homestead law detailing eligibility for heads of families or individuals 21 and older who are US citizens or intend to be, with limits of 160 acres per state. It covers entry fees, residence and cultivation requirements, proof periods, patent issuance, and special provisions for widows, soldiers, unmarried women, and family members.
Charles Nuzum, a dry land farmer from Lower Deer creek, reports excellent moisture and vigorous growth after recent rains. He uses Campbell system with modifications and notes potatoes already rising above ground while his garden and grain prospects look strong. He believes non irrigated farming can be profitable here with proper methods.
C. H. Lippy of McLeod reported seventeen mares sold to Great Falls parties. He did not reveal exact figures but said average price reached $200. Demand for draft animals rises with unprecedented eastern and northern immigration, pushing prices higher.
The Big Timber fire department annual election re-elected all incumbents. H. O. Kellogg and H. R. Snyder were recommended for chief and assistant by the city council. Robert Allen remains secretary-treasurer and H. C. Pound continues as foreman. Company officers to be chosen later.
A petition in Lewistown for the candidacy of Judge E K Cheadle for chief justice of the state supreme court circulated last week. The judiciary is nonpartisan and nominations come by petition with a required percent of votes from the last election to place a name on the ballot.
Last Monday five passenger department representatives led by L. J. Bricker inspected the Glass Lindsay irrigation project with J. E. Spurling escort. The group toured the site, met local business leaders, and Bricker said the project exceeds expectations and could attract settlers, benefiting Big Timber and Sweet Grass county. They spent the night in Hunters and continued westward Tuesday.
Under 5 000 population limits no lodge may be formed in small towns, forcing surrounding areas to join larger centers. Big Timber contributes heavily to Livingston lodge members, which existed before the law. Dell Whitney planned a trip to Chicago to ride the goat but found local members at hand to welcome him.
New York announced Telepost plans to extend its automatic telegraph and telephone network to Montana. Cities including Helena Big Timber Anaconda Butte Dillon and Missoula are listed as early connection targets with proposed rates and speed. William H. McCollum leads the project, tied to Edison associate Patrick Delany, tracing progress from St Louis to Montana. Continued Yellowstone water delays bridge work east of the city.
Prof A Chamberlain of South Dakota argues dry land farming west of the Missouri, plowing every alternate year to ten inches, could reduce Mississippi valley floods. He says rainfall west of the ninety eighth meridian is sufficient to affect river volumes, contradicting the snow melt theory. Continued on Page 3.
