Montana’s agricultural lands in Sweet Grass and surrounding counties soar in value as land fetches 30 dollars an acre for dry land, with Fergus County selling sections at 55 and 64 dollars per acre. Immigration rises as eastern farmers settle in, and farm production now rivals or exceeds mineral wealth in the state.
May term begins as Judge Henry fixes May 23 for several trials. Alex Grant pleads guilty to grand larceny stealing stock from C F Stocker and gets one year in state prison. Blaser and Habernich face charges with trial scheduled May 23. Muhlbach appeals a mining claim notice destruction. Ratcliff pleads not guilty to second degree assault with trial set May 24. Civil cases disposed and others carried over with rulings and deadlines noted.
Under Alderman Richards guidance the park receives major upgrades. A new western bridge foundation, riprap along the eastern bank, and tree trimming with brush removal are under way to prevent erosion and improve the grounds. The city seeks benches and enhanced scenery, claiming Big Timber hosts the state’s most attractive park and could become an ideal natural retreat.
Washington May 9 Secretary Wilson signed memorandums with Great Northern and Northern Pacific railways to limit forest fire risk along all lines. Railroads must clear inflammable material up to 200 feet beyond rights of way and equip non oil burning locomotives with spark arresters. Joint actions to fight fires along lines are planned.

Sweet Grass county mourns Nicholas Tintinger a well known citizen who died suddenly of paralysis on Friday May 9. born May 22 1822 in Lorraine he emigrated to the United States in 1855 living briefly in New York before settling elsewhere. He survived by his wife and was attended by Father Blaere at times.
