Helena May 9 F B Linfield dean of Montana state college of agriculture at Bozeman spoke in Helena about arranging space for an agriculture display at the Montana state fair this fall. He warned that crops mean everything to Montana as another dry year could drive away settlers who came seeking prosperity. He noted a pattern of dry years every five to six years and that Montana has just endured two dry years, predicting a run of good years ahead.
Brussels May 11 The body of Edith Cavell the English nurse executed by Germans in 1916 for aiding prisoners will be interred in England after removal on May 13. Exhumed March 17 in Brussels the coffin will travel by rail from Gare du Nord with military honors and British Belgian escort to Ostend then Dover and London for interment at Westminster Abbey.
The fifth and last Victory Liberty Loan shows strong oversubscription with districts reporting high uptake. Officials estimate total subscriptions near six billion, though only 3.8 billion official tally is recorded so far, with significant regional demand from Minneapolis St Louis and Cleveland. The drive ends amid optimistic notes from Treasury and Liberty loan organizers.
Recognition by the federal administration of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is seen as the only path to avert a nationwide strike affecting about 150 000 employees. The referendum showed no eight to one majority in favor of striking. Charles P Ford urged Postmaster General Surleson to intervene.
In Mount Clemens Michigan on May 12 the Henry Ford libel suit against the Chicago Tribune moves forward as seven panel members are examined by plaintiffs counsel. Ford alleges the June 23, 1916 Tribune editorial damaged his name and reputation, calling him an anarchist and an ignorant idealist, injuring his feelings and business. The trial opened with Ford arriving briefly, accompanied by his secretary and son Edsel.
Montana Supreme Court hears whether house bill 30, a new tax law, divides property into taxable and exempt classes. Assistant AG Frank Woody argues unconstitutionality. Leonard of Butte and von Tobel of Lewistown defend the measure while Tilger seeks injunction on boat tax. The case tests constitutional class division and the state education board’s equalization power.
Missoula reports the winter kill is light for Montana winter wheat with 705000 acres sown last fall, 4.5 percent abandoned, leaving 647000 acres for harvest. Rye area totals 5000 acres, 20 percent of last year, hay near last year but 10 percent above recent averages. Livestock losses run below the 10 year average due to milder winter.
Funeral held at the Kent ranch near Quebec for Mrs Mary Kent widow of Thomas Kent early Montana stockman. She died in Lodge Grass after a week ill ness from flu complications at age 59 years 7 months. She lived at the old home 41 years and left four daughters and two more who died in infancy and 21 year old Maggie. Surviving daughters and spouses listed with grandchildren attended. Burial at Kent cemetery beside her husband.
Coroua Christi Texas May 8 Fifteen persons were killed last night when a severe tornado swept the lower Rio Grande valley demolishing farm houses and damaging crops. Reports said the death toll could rise and many victims were Mexicans amid a hailstorm and heavy wind.
Twenty two mounted bandits raided Cananea Sonora then attacked Douglas Ariz. Five police officers and the city jailer were killed during the assault and prisoners freed. Stores including Francisca Hopkins Bros and a jewelry shop were robbed of merchandise and valuables. The bandits fled into the mountains after looting the Mercantile Bank of Cananea and other targets. Local reports describe the raid occurring around two in the morning with manager Almada of the Mercantile Bank abducted to his bank for looting.
The second meeting of the Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce at the High School auditorium resulted in a reconstituted group named the Sweet Grass County Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. Trustees were reorganized with seven city members and seven outside precincts two each, total 21. Membership fee cut from 10 to 6 and quorum raised to 60 percent. town trustees set for election May 31, with seven city trustees named: L. F. Douthett, J. H. Trower, Ed Ellingson, Dr. Claiborn, H. H. Austin, A. H. Arneson, C. W. Campbell.
Berlin reports wave of protests across Germany after the peace terms are presented. Citizens, states, districts, clubs, and parties condemn the document as unjust and contrary to Wilson's fourteen points amid widespread remonstrances.
