Legionnaires from eight Montana posts gather in Bozeman on Sunday May 4 for the district 7 spring meeting. Grover C. Schmidt Jr will report on Boys State plans and on Junior baseball and the state convention in Billings. Auxiliary holds its spring meeting with tea and meetings followed by a 6 pm smorgasbord at the Legion hall.
The Red Cross remains about 300 dollars short of its quota after a raised goal due to flood disasters. Fund chairman Palmer Finsvik appeals for a quick rally of donors, asking those not yet solicited or organizations to mail checks or visit Mrs. Lloyd Severance at the bank. The goal was increased to fund the bloodmobile unit visiting on May 8 after a October presence, with more funds raised this year than last.
Two juvenile offenders escaped from a Miles City reform school were caught in Harlowton after burglarizing a Melville store and bar. The pair, one former Melville resident and one from Butte, stole a car, fled toward North Dakota, and raided a Milwaukee depot before authorities recovered loot and returned them to Miles City.
The Make Believe junior promenade set for Saturday May 10 in the new high school gym. The junior class invites juniors seniors parents alumni and the rest of the school to attend. Admittance charged for all but certain guests. The event features river scenes from Show Boat a cabaret area with hoop skirts and punch service by glamorous southern belles. The grand march at 10 30 and dancing from 9 with Joel Story and his orchestra providing music.
Betty Haddon will play trombone in the 250 piece All State band and Sigrid Tollefson will sing in the 300 voice All State choir at the University of Montana. Tollefson enters the state solo contest with winners advancing to the 1952 national event. Joel Story, their instructor, thanks local groups for sponsorship and notes the chance to hear university concerts and meet peers during the Missoula trip.
The rural interscholastic and track meet occurs this Saturday May 3 with registration at 8 45 to 9 15 at the high school office A L Schump leads registration and a 25 cent lunch fee applies The program lists scholastic contests at the high school auditorium awards at the gym athletic events at the football field and an art and craft exhibit open all day Supt Margaret Deegan leads scholastic contests and Willard Anderson directs track events The event theme is Montana in the Making and includes a morning program with songs dances and skits from local schools culminating in a 10 30 am program at the new gym.
A Saturday night square and line dance festival at the high school gym drew nearly 400 dancers plus grade school exhibition teams. About 275 spectators attended with 25 towns represented including Sheridan and Wye. Guest callers performed as Marge and Joe Enrico of Red Lodge showcased a 1920s style number.
Pvt Alfred L Wood of the Fifth armored division Camp Chaffee Arkansas ends a 21 day furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs W J Wood and proceeds to Fort Lawton Washington for assignment to the Far East command Don Haas leaves for Galion Ohio for an eight week course in operation and maintenance of the new automatic telephone system to be installed here early next year training will be in the factory supplying the equipment.
Sweet Grass County High School entries in the district speech contest in Lewistown last Friday earned top prizes and high scores. Betty Loftsgaarden won second in original oratory and declamation, Lois Read second in serious declamation, Helen Sargent third in humorous declamation, and Don Phelps fourth in oratorical declamation. Lois, Helen, Betty Jo and Sigrid Tollefson will travel to Missoula on May 15 for the state meet.
Local talent joins in a National Music week event at the new high school gym next Wednesday at 8 p m. The program features the high school band under Joel Story, chorus led by Mrs A R McDonnell, Sigrid Tollefson solo, a male quartet with Story, Ray Beck, Mal Goosey and Jim Goosey, plus a Stephen Foster medley from the brass ensemble. Betty Loftsgaarden reads an essay I Am Music, concluding with a combined band selection. The event promotes making life more musical through singing, listening, and civic musical involvement.
County committees line up to solicit donors for the Red Cross bloodmobile arriving next Thursday May 8 to beat a 150 unit quota. Recruitment targets include teachers and antelope hunters with volunteers urged to call chairmen. Local organizers emphasize no need to wait to be contacted.
The high school track team placed in a five team invitational in Columbus last Saturday earning ten points. Jim McCauley led with eight points from second in the high and low hurdles and third in the 100 yard dash. Dad! Dahl threw 39 feet 3 inches for third in the shot. The squad expects better showings at Rocky Mountain college in Billings. Other competitors included Bernard Lamach Cody Mack Don Voges Don Mlekush Armond Johnson and David Bott with Don Bray as team manager.
A district meeting of the Republican party will be held tomorrow at 8 p m at the Park hotel in Livingston. It features discussions on registration precinct officers finances candidates counties and conventions with state central committee members Joe McElwain and Mayo Story Dean attending. Everyone is invited to attend and a no host dinner is planned at 7 p m.
Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic church for James M. Rankin 85 who died Thursday at Sweet Grass Community Clinic. Fr T P Connelly presided with burial in Columbus Cemetery. Rankin longtime local resident, he had no known relatives and had worked for county ranchers. He died after a fall caused hip fracture and infirmities of old age. Pallbearers were John Deegan Harry Mack Chas Bouse Joe Bartholomaus Ed Hodan Claude C Gray.
Mr and Mrs David Howard were accepted as missionaries with Latin American Mission Inc announced by director R Kenneth Strachan. They will move to San Jose Costa Rica for a year of Spanish study before assignments. They live in Wheaton Illinois where Howard pursues a theology masters at Wheaton Theological Seminary and both attended Wheaton College.
