Herders Win Southern B Championship at Big Timber
Sweet Grass High School Sheepherders won the Southern Division Class B title 71 to 63 over Red Lodge in Big Timber advancing to the State B Tournament in Cut Bank on March 13 to 15. The victory capped an eight game win streak and followed wins over Forsyth and Lodge Grass.

Livingston Welcomes Fossums as New Ranch Workers
Mr and Mrs Ron Fossum and their son plan to move to Livingston where Ron will work on the Clyde Sullivan ranch. He has been employed at Starr Ford in Billings. Rosie Carter learns of the birth of her twenty seventh great grandchild born March 1 to Mr and Mrs Dan Whitlock of Billings. Mrs Whitlock is Carter's granddaughter.

Former Helena teacher Nellie Sime dies at 79
Nellie Amelia Sime, 79, longtime Cascade schoolteacher, died at her Helena home. Born August 6 1889 in Soldiers Grove Wisconsin she taught in Melville Big Timber Cascade area from 1917 to 1919 and Cascade Elementary was named after her in 1957. She was active in Eastern Star and Girl Scouts and lived with sister Emma Sime of Helena. Services were held at Fischer Funeral Chapel and in Readstown Wisconsin with burial back in Soldiers Grove.

Fair View Ranch Bull Sale Draws Crowd
The annual Angus bull sale at Fair View Ranch near Melville on February 26 drew a large crowd despite bad weather in Montana. The top bull sold for $1800 to Windswept Angus Ranch in Harold Kirchner, Rapelje, with the second top at $1200 to Harold Polich of Ulm. Fair View Angus sold into five states: Wisconsin, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and Montana.

Lloyd Mosdal reports South Korea signed a $17 million purchase deal for U S wheat and barley with the Commodity Credit Corp. The order boosts Montana growers as shipments will depart from West Coast ports and include dark northern spring to hard red winter wheat. The Montana Wheat Commission continues backing Western Wheat to build the Koreamarket.

Big Timber Sheriff Reports Thefts Drunken Pedestrian And Fire Loss
A car was reported stolen in Big Timber and found next morning on a residential street. An intoxicated pedestrian required help to get home after falling in the street. A car containing minors east of Big Timber was found drinking beer. each was fined 50 dollars by the Judge. A hit and run on Mc Leod Street led to a DW I charge, no license, and leaving the scene. A fire at Rutledge's Whispering Pines ranch destroyed a log barn and several weaner pigs.

Measurements by the Soil Conservation Service show snow depth above the 15 year average at Independance Castle and Monument Peak with 56.2 and 76.9 inches respectively and water equivalents of 17.6 and 25 inches. Soil moisture remains above average raising runoff, with the Columbia River Drainage and Missouri River Drainage described as well above average in many headwaters. Measurements were taken last Friday by Frank Biglen and Ron Peterson. Next check is March 28.

Widdicombe Rites Today In Montana Funeral Service
Funeral services for William L. Widdicombe 68 are held today at 2:00 p.m. from Lowry Funeral Home in Harlowton with Rev. Richard Kienitz officiating. Burial is at Mountain View Cemetery. He was born February 17 1906 in Deer Creek Sweet Grass County and lived in Big Timber, Harlowton, Shawmut, and Libby. He married Mathilda Mathes in Columbus October 30 1930 and later ran a mink ranch before retiring to Shawmut. Survivors include Mathilda, six sons, one daughter, a brother, one sister, 19 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Vaughn Market was burglarized after closing last Wednesday night. Intruders entered through a skylight, stole cash and checks, and replaced the skylight pane. The missing funds are about $300. The sheriff's office investigates.
