Dr George T Baskett 82 died at home after an extended illness from a cerebral vascular accident due to arteriosclerosis. He was born January 9 1882 in Grainsville Texas and educated at the University of Texas and University of Michigan medical school. He held multiple state hospital superintendent roles and retired to Big Timber with his wife Olive Thorne Baskett. Funeral services were held Saturday at Lowry Chapel with Rev Ben Knopp officiating.

Pallbearers listed include Peter Gudmestad John Deegan Ludvig Allestad Erling Svenson Sigve Ueland and Peter K Pederson. Burial was in Mountain View. Survivors include brother Alfred Undheim of Big Timber and two brothers in Norway plus nephew Olaf Maland.

In 1879 Charles Aubrey attempted a trading post build in the Blackfeet Reservation with Indian labor under US supervision. Pay rates varied by role, with mortar and water workers paid 1.25 and 1.50 dollars per day. A sabotage incident arose when mortar workers smoked in mud pits, delaying work and triggering a labor dispute.

Former Missoula Resident Florence Kirkwood Dies at 81
Florence R. Kirkwood, 81, a former Missoula resident, died Tuesday morning while living with a daughter. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Squire-Simmons-Carr Funeral Home with committal at Mountain View Cemetery, Big Timber, Saturday at 10 a.m. Rev. Ben Knopp will officiate. Born March 29, 1882 in New Strantonville Ohio. She was predeceased by husband George Kirkwood in 1936. The Kirkwoods left Big Timber in 1927. Survivors include two daughters and four sons.

Dana Strobel of Sweet Grass County High School earned an all expense paid trip to the New York World’s Fair. The award was funded by Henry Liggett of Eaton Becker ranch, with support from Stephens Auto Service and Ford Tractor and Implement Co. The plan sends Strobel from Billings to New York City for a three day tour including the United Nations and Empire State Building.

Survey Finds Strong Snow Pack in Upper Boulder Region
A Monday snow survey in the upper Boulder country reports a robust snow pack with higher water content than last year.
