The Williams family of Fairview Ranches donates a 16 station Universal Gym to SGHS. Acting Principal Jim Graham says the equipment will aid PE and athletics and may serve the community in time. The gym built for up to 16 users features weights and body conditioning devices.
The SGC Sheriff's Dept. reports two weekend robberies. At Todd Construction Co. office someone cut a window screen to steal coffee funds. fingerprints suggest juveniles may be involved. At Big Timber Veterinary Clinic entry was through a window, petty cash vanished, and many dogs were freed before deputies recovered them. Investigations continue.
Sweet Grass County Commissioners and Mayor Oscar Stephens received Governor Judge's energy alert asking local governments to cut energy use by 10 percent. The letter calls for voluntary reductions and progress reports in August as water shortages threaten electricity manufacture. City Hall says plans not finalized though lights have already been cut by 90 percent by not turning them all on.
Carolyn Green was appointed to fill the Melville district vacancy on the SGHS Board of Trustees during a special Monday meeting. The appointment runs until the April general election when she must file as a candidate for the unexpired term. Green and the board are acting under state law after Tack Van Cleve resigned. Green's family owns a ranch in the Melville area.
The National Association of Primitive Riflemen hosts its annual buckskin rendezvous July 1 4 at Howie Road east of Big Timber. Over 75 tipi camps and authentic 1800s style living expected as 200 plus families from Florida Maine Washington and Texas attend the muzzle loading gathering.
A spaghetti supper and silent auction are scheduled from 5 to 7 30 p m at the Legion Hall to raise funds for the Overland Golf Course. The new course nears completion with potential late summer play. adult admission is 2 75, ages 12 and under 1 50, and children under 6 enter free.
The second annual Independence Day service will be held at Lions Park in Hia.m on Sunday July 3 led by Rev. Richard Kienitz with welcome remarks by Father John Haligowski and sermons by multiple pastors. The event includes organ music, a community chorus and hymns. If weather stops the outdoor service it will move to Big Timber Lutheran Church.
A noon meeting of the Chamber of Commerce elected Charles Heckart as first president and W. J. Johnson as vice president. Jan McCann will be secretary and Dale Oberly treasurer. The board includes three year term directors Phil Moulden and Terry Ryles, two year Ramona Holderman and Harold McLauchlan, one year Barbara Sell and Ed Brannon. Next meeting is July 21 at Frye's with a noon buffet.
