Cremer rodeo in Big Timber will carry a Go Western theme with residents urged to wear western garb through the event. Sponsors expect limited profit but aim to boost town visibility as a public service with support from the Jaycees and the Ropin' n' Ridin' club.

Funeral services for Milo Westervelt, dragged to death by a horse last week, were held Saturday at 4 pm at Lowry Funeral Home with Rev J D Lindley presiding. Military honors at Mountain View followed by a firing squad and flag presentation capped the solemn rites. Milo, born December 30 1915 in Plainfield Iowa, moved with family to Reed Point and Big Timber before settling near Springdale. He served 21% years in World War II and is survived by his widow Anne Hawley Westervelt and three children Linda Bonnie and Mark plus siblings and in laws.
Wheat growers in Sweet Grass County vote on the 1956 marketing quotas with polling 9 a m to 6 p m at the ASC office. If two thirds approve quotas, the 1956 price support rises to at least 1.81 per bushel with 45 percent penalties on excess wheat. if rejected, penalties vanish and support is 1.19. Absentee and religious ballot options are outlined for eligible voters within the county.
The record hailstorm struck Big Timber last Thursday around 6 pm, lasting minutes but causing thousands in home damage. Gardens suffered, trees stripped of leaves, and fruit trees damaged with bruised apples and ruined flowers across town.
Hail over six inches deep along the east side of McLeod Street flooded curbs while nearly two inches covered streets after the storm. Roofs and sidings were shredded, many windows broken, and farms like Ollestads and Mosness suffered near total hay losses. Torrential rains caused field washouts as the storm moved northeast. Insurance largely covered town damages.
Rabbi Samuel Horowitz of Congregation Beth Aaron in Billings will deliver a sermon on “Developing Our Maximum Capacities” at the Congregational church Sunday at 11 AM using Talmudic material. A tape recording of the sermon will be used in Wednesday evening worship.
Police report that checks totaling 544 dollars meant for deposit at a Missoula bank were found in a mailbox on a Saturday. Lieutenant Doyle said 151 dollars in cash accompanying the checks is missing. Linn Hanson of Lolo said he intended to deposit funds for his son James L. Hanson reported the money and checks were missing from his pocket upon arriving at the bank.
A reorganization meeting of the Sweet Grass County Republican Women's club was held at Frye's cafe with state president Mrs Ellen Weidman of Polson as guest speaker. Temporary chairman Mrs C F Ullman appointed a nominating committee for reports at the next meeting on July 15 at 1 00 PM.
A post office employee found checks at a street corner letter box after noting missing cash. The cash was not recovered and the checks were returned to the Hanson family. Doyle suggested Hanson may have dropped them accidentally.
Three Big Timber motel operators react to Acting Governor Fred L. Robinsons suggestion of a 10 dollar a year tax on cabins rented above five dollars a night. Harlan R. Russell of Laurel cites Montana Chamber data showing tourists spend more on food and goods than lodging, arguing the tax targets only one segment of a broad tourist economy.
Due to a vaccine shortage there will be no second polio shots for children who received their first on June 13. First doses will be offered to all eligible children who missed the 13th, on Monday June 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Community Hospital.
Jim Schneider's PeeWees, last year's champions, opened the season by losing 11 to 20 to the Livingston Indians. Schneider used all 16 players, with Bill Matthew and Bob Bowers assisting. Upcoming games include Livingston Tigers, Clyde Park, Livingston Pirates, and Livingston Cubs.
Forest Kel er and Montana Game Warden crew completed a golden trout egg taking at Sylvan take East Rosebud last week. They captured 65 430 eggs by line and stripping to feed Big Timber hatchery, sending them by pack train in three trips. Officials aim to build Montana’s own supply after California halted exports. Thirty thousand eggs were also taken from Hamilton brood stock. Participants included Joe Gaab Vern Wapples E B Cangose and Perry Nelson.

Helena Mrs Frances Strobel of Big Timber appealed to the Montana Supreme Court from a district court manslaughter conviction. A Sweet Grass County jury found her guilty on Oct 16 1954 in the highway death of Gerald Little a Laurel truck driver who burned to death in his oil tanker after a head on collision on U S Highway 10 east of Big Timber. Dist Judge Benjamin E Berg sentenced her to five years in Deer Lodge prison then suspended the sentence per jury recommendation.
The Melville Home Demonstration club will hold a charity afternoon at Allman hall in Melville next Wednesday at 2 30. The event invites clothing for 2 to 7 year olds and dishware for the home. Coffee and doughnuts will be served during the afternoon.
Washington reports that Secretary of the Army Robert Stevens resigned citing compelling personal considerations. President Eisenhower nominated Wilber Brucker, former Michigan governor, to succeed him as Army secretary, with Stevens leaving the Pentagon by late July after a noted clash with Senator McCarthy over alleged subversion and defense favoritism.
