Torrential rains wash out county bridges and flood roads

Heavy week long rainfall collapses bridges including Otter creek crossing north of town and threatens Bridger creek highway 10. Mrs. Erwin Mack narrowly avoided a fall on a wet bridge brink after it collapsed. Traffic rerouted around Grey Cliff Yellowstone bridge and Melville. Big Timber reports 214 inches in 12 hours unofficial, 3.11 inches for the June 7 to 14 week officially.

Rodeo Results Announced From Big Timber Event

Sunday rodeo at Big Timber featured multiple event placings with Chuck Swanson and others earning top bronc scores, Ken Cutzler leading bull riding, Arnile Johnson clocking 14 seconds in calf roping, and Bob Cullison becoming all around cowboy after placing in two events. Dick Ballenger topped steer wrestling with a $368.40 payout.

Helicopter Aids Road Engineering Near Big Timber

Residents report a U. S. Forest Service contracted helicopter flying low Tuesday evening over Big Timber. Rangers say it will triangulate ground control for engineering aerial photos to map the Main Boulder road from Two Mile bridge to Four Mile field station. This method aims to compare locations and costs with minimal field work.

Rodeo Queen Magdalen Fehlmann Crowned Freshman Candidate

Magdalen Fehlmann, freshman candidate and daughter of Rudy and Mrs Fehlmann of McLeod, reigns as rodeo queen for Sundays festivities judged on poise, personality and horsemanship. Linda Clayton, sponsor by the high school band and daughter of G E Clayton, is runner up. Ann Bryce, second runner up, sponsored by the sophomore class and daughter of Dillard Bryce of Melville.

Full Schedule of City Recreation

The City Recreation Program starts today with a full activity schedule. The first high school college age dance moves to Friday night June 30, and Mrs. Roger Whidden offers tennis instruction in the morning. Bob Hauck seeks riflery and horseshoes instructors, plus arts and crafts teachers. Baseball players should bring gloves, as equipment is limited. Assistants to Hauck are James McGehee and Rick Henthorn. The swimming program is separate and will start later.

Grandson Receives $3 000 Scholarship

Absarokee Wagon Train Joins Parade

The Absarokee wagon train arrived at its campsite on highway 191 north of town around six Saturday evening to participate in Sunday’s parade. The five wagons with riders and pack mules traveled from Absarokee in two days, camping at the Pierce ranch near Columbus first night. 65 travelers endured rain without major issues and were fed chuck wagon stew by the T-Bone CowBelles of Sweet Grass county. No hostile Indians appeared, and the group joined the parade in full force to cheers from onlookers.

Visitors from Manila and Missoula visit MSU hosts over weekend

Dely Castillo of Manila Philippines and Mar cia Strong of Missoula were guests of Diana Refsland this weekend. Castillo enjoyed the parade and rodeo a first time sight for her home country. Gary Refsland also visited while all young people are MSU students in Bozeman.

Special Rodeo Antics in Sea of Mud at Big Timber

A large crowd enjoyed the annual Big Timber Rodeo on a mud soaked day. Riders and animals struggled for footing with many slipping or exiting muddy, but no serious injuries occurred. Benny Reynolds delivered a strong bull ride while Ken Noddings drew laughs for mud covered after a steer wrestle.

Popes Take First Second in T Race at Model T Rally

The Model T race drew 22 entries for a $175 purse and trophies donated by Starr Ford. Laurence Pope of Lewistown set the best time at 59 minutes 50 seconds, with John Pope second and Phil Polillo third. Park County officials from Five Watters narrated as drivers lined up on highway 191 for a 48 mile loop, and after the race spectators gathered at City Park for coffee. An early collision involved three driverless T's but caused only minor damage.

Highway Collision Injures Four Near Reed Point

An accident on highway 10 east of town near Reed Point at 3:30 p m Wednesday left Robert Lee Peckham of Seattle and Doris Eder Nyhart of Twin Bridges with injuries. Carl Eder, 88, and another Columbus passenger were hospitalized with serious wounds. both cars were demolished. Peckham later flown to Helena. The crash site has seen several accidents since road completion.

Mr and Mrs John R Roe and their family travel to Logan Utah where John will attend the university summer session. The family hopes a change of scene will refresh them through the summer.

Rodeo Parade Earns High Marks in Big Timber

Big Timber celebrated a standout Rodeo Parade with wide participation from local groups and out of town entries. Judges from Absarokee cited strong 4H club involvement and notable floats from Wiligro Garden Club Woman’s Club Rainbow Girls and others.

The American Legion Redlegs host Clyde Park Athletics at City ball park around 6 30 in their second game of the season. Last week Livingston Cubs pitcher Carlisle shut out the locals 4 0 as Larry Hauge held the visitors to three hits. Coach Roger Hauge plans a Bill Buster on mound and Richard Henthorn catching in tonight's lineup amid drizzle turning to rain.

Indians Perform In Rodeo Parade

The Crow Agency dance group of six dancers and two singers added color to a Sunday parade. They have won many western prizes and will tour the south next weekend. The group performed on a large truck provided by West Boulder Lumber Co with costumes handmade by the wives.
