Pardon for Charles Countryman Ends Long Struggle
Mrs Patience Countryman mortgagees her California home to win a Montana pardon for her son Charles Countryman. The 20 year sentence for murder in Stillwater was overturned after evidence of self defense and a juried verdict of second degree murder. Governor Richards granted clemency citing the mother’s persistence and belief in her son. The pardon now awaits a board review. First Regular Meeting of Sweet Grass County Board
The June 3 1895 session of the Sweet Grass County Board of Commissioners met at 9 a m with J W Bailey A C Logan and P O Fallang present and Geo I Hudson clerk. They declined to lay out a road up Big Deer creek, adjourned to 1:30 p m, then appointed Frank Lee game warden at 12 50 monthly through September 1 1895. Bills and salaries for various county officers and services were reviewed and approved, including jurors witnesses and public works. The board adjourned to inspect Big Timber creek grade near Rapstad's ranch and reconvened June 4 1895.
