One hundred fifty friends honored Mr. and Mrs. Fred Swift on their 25th wedding anniversary at the Reed Point gym. The event featured music, readings, and a four tier cake, with guests from Big Timber and Absarokee and remarks by local officials.
Sweet Grass county approves 1956 wheat acreage allotment totaling 11 242 acres as part of a 55 million acre national program. Montana receives 4 002 138 acres. Notices to producers expected by June 10 with a referendum on marketing quotas planned for June 25. Eligible voters include all wheat growers with more than 15 acres of wheat for harvest in 1956.
Funeral services were held at Lowry Funeral Home for Florence Carney 61 who died Tuesday in a Livingston hospital after a long illness. The ceremony was led by Rev E Brentwood Barker with organ music and pallbearers named. She was born July 5 1893 in Rockford Ohio and lived in Livingston most of her life. She studied at Park County High School Montana State University Missouri Stanford Simmons College and University of Chicago. Survivors include her mother Miss Carney a brother John Carney and two sisters Mrs Ray Yardley and Grace Carney. Interment followed at Mountain View.
Myrtle Miriah Hauge 37 wife of Donald Hauge of Billings died in a hospital Tuesday from a liver ailment after ill health since January. Born April 18 1918 in Acton she had two children from a prior marriage and is survived by her husband two sisters and three brothers. Funeral services set for Friday 130 p m at Smiths Chapel with Rev A C Caton officiating.
Raymond Elgen has been re assigned from furlough and is now stationed at Mineral Wells Texas with 884th E.A.M. Co Wolters AFB Mineral Wells.
Choir director Clifton A. Madson leads the Augustana academy cappella choir of Canton S D in a sacred music concert at the Lutheran church this Thursday at 8 oclock. Admission is free with a free will offering. The group is en route to the Luther League convention in San Francisco.
Catherine Frang aged 65 died of a heart attack at Park hospital in Livingston after touring Yellowstone with the Amery party. Funeral set for Saturday at Lowry Funeral Home with interment in Mountain View. Survivors include daughter Claire Simmons and son R J Frang along with siblings and grandsons.
Glasgow high school student scientists locate a 20 foot long Triceratops fossil about 15 miles south of the Fort Peck spillway. Instructor How ard Nelson plans a summer expedition to recover more remains believed to be about 40 million years old.
Mrs Chas Brown and Mrs Carl Youngburg and daughter Carla of New Hartford Indiana left Sunday after a two week visit at the Clarence Titeca home. Mrs Brown is a sister of Mrs Titeca.
Polio inoculations for first and second grade children will occur Monday June 13 at the grade school auditorium starting 9 am. Dr D Claiborn announced the free shots sourced from Eli Lilly with federal rechecking. If not taken now the vaccine may cost $8 to $10 per shot.
Troop 21 of Big Timber won the districts top rating from Absaroka at a Yellowstone Valley Council meet held at Luccock park. They earned the all around camping trophy for menu campsite discipline and more. Harold Tetlie led the troop with two patrols Flaming Arrows and Rattlesnakes earning class A camping. About 80 boys from Livingston Wilsall and Big Timber attended the event.
Daughters of Bud Kerr Bridger Creek and Mrs Ted Hetland married at Ab sarokee on May 27. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Al Simmonson. Bride 1954 Sweet Grass high graduate. Groom discharged from the Marine corps after three years. They will live in Fishtail where George works in a store.
The Big Timber Jaycees schedule a fireworks show at the fairgrounds on Saturday night July 2. The event will also feature junior boxing matches with participation open to boys in fifth or sixth grade, coordinated by Chuck Nicholson and Herb McCauley.
Mrs. Linnie Webb, a pioneer of Sweet Grass county, died at Community Hospital from cardiac failure. Funeral services were held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with burial at Mountain View. Born June 8 1873 in Troy Maine she married Lew Webb in 1891 and lived on the Webb ranch near Big Timber before returning to Maine briefly and Montana again. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Edna Carter of Unity Maine.
Rev. Roy Gilbertson, Lutheran minister from Plains and brother of Mrs. Wm. Hood, was injured when his car struck a deer on Highway 6 near Townsend. The vehicle overturned, he suffered a broken collar bone, and was taken to Deaconess Hospital in Billings. He had been slated to preach the convention opening.
Montana's 4th legislative assembly revisions to traffic rules take effect July 1. Uniform right of way standards will apply statewide, with local controls allowed only with Highway Commission approval. Turn indicators become required for wide loads, replacing the hand arm signals for safety. self illuminating devices preferred after dark.
Men of Co. B 210th Engineers head to Fort Harrison for two weeks of field training. An advance party led by Wm Dempster Terry Gallentine and Ray Prevost departs today, with the main unit following Sunday by motor convoy after breakfast at the Boulder cafe. They will return June 26, led by Lt Paul Nyre and Lt Robert Phillips among others.
Washington Congressman Orvin B. Flare will chair a six man panel at the National Young Republican convention in Detroit on June 17. The panel discusses campaign techniques in rural agricultural areas with Flare as moderator and includes Governor Joe Foss and five other Republicans. Flare says candidates must not hedge but provide the people with all the facts.
Sweet Grass County High School reports 13 students with perfect attendance and 22 who missed at most one day. Overall attendance for the year is 95.6 percent, down from 96.34 the previous year, with seniors 94.4 and other classes around 95.8–96.1. There were 141 tardiness cases distributed across grades. list of perfect attendance names includes Marion Beley and several others.
Mrs Enger Chapel, who has been in California with relatives for a couple of months, is expected to return to Livingston sometime next week.
Montana lawmakers and colleagues discuss a proposed Leif Ericsson statue in Washington DC with multiple spellings noted. Senators from several states back the resolution while the Norwegian embassy and local lawyers offer variants such as Ericson, Eiriksson, Erickson, and Heirkccsson.
All bids for the Sweet Grass county wool pool were rejected yesterday. The highest bid reached 481 percent, with about 15 buyers present but only three actual bids submitted. The Stillwater wool pool had turned down a 52 5/8 bid last week.
