Three U S Geologic Survey Workers Die in Little Rockies Fire
A forest blaze in the Little Rockies southeast of Havre Mont kills three U S Geological Survey crew members Cameron Baker John Rowles and S R Brockunier and injures another. The fire on a 25 mile front forced evacuations with crews from Fort Belknap Harlem Malta and surrounding mining camps redirected to battle. Baker born 1912 in Iowa held teaching posts and studied at Montana State Northern Montana and Northwestern universities. The blaze began near Lodge Pole and threatened Zortman before winds spreading the flames.

Mother of Gov Holt Dies in Miles City at 83
Mrs. Benjamin K. Holt mother of Governor Elmer Holt of Montana died at the family home Thursday night at age 83. Funeral services were held in Miles City with Rev J L Craig presiding. Gov Holt and two sisters were at her bedside. She was born October 24 1852 in Crab Orchard Kentucky and married Christmas Day 1873 at Savannah Missouri. She and her husband operated livestock ranches in eastern Montana. Survivors include daughters Mrs Thomas Butler Miles City and Mrs T A Mapes Denver.

Chicago Gas Purge Kills 200 Stray Dogs at Pound
In Chicago on July 25 a rabies scare led to a gas purge at the city dog pound. Two hundred homeless dogs were killed in minutes in a gas chamber after three people died from tainted bites and 71 were bitten yesterday. Police Sgt. Harry J. McCavery said all animals were ill crippled or considered a menace to public health.

Jury Convicts Peifer on Kidnaping Charge
A federal court jury in St. Paul convicts John P. Peifer, night club owner, of conspiracy in the $100,000 kidnapping of William Hamm Jr. The verdict came after about 25 hours of deliberation. Sentencing is set for next Wednesday. he remains free on $100,000 bond.

Dog That Shot Policeman Stirs Detroit News
Detroit July 25. Patrolman William Huey responded to a report of a mad dog at large. He chased with a lasso and revolver, fired and missed. The dog seized the lasso, pulled Huey, causing a fall and a bullet wound to the right foot. Huey was hospitalized. the dog escaped.

Five Minutes to Midnight dominated the outlaw herd, tossing Nick Knight of Cody Wyoming in 4.5 seconds. Knight struggled to restrain the black horse at the chute.

John W. Nelson former Helena editor who was convicted by the Montana supreme court of contempt was granted a stay of execution to allow an appeal to the U S Supreme Court.
