Wheat growers in Sweet Grass county vote at the ASC county office from 8 am to 7 pm to decide whether marketing quotas will be in effect for 1961. Eligible voters include farm owners operators tenants and sharecroppers with wheat on qualifying farms.
Harold F Boes and his family have settled in Norway for ten months where he teaches American history English and literature at the University of Oslo as a Fulbright scholar. They note high food costs and mild disarray with Norwegian language study while enjoying Oslo’s flowers and scenery.
Local Cub Scouts plan a Saturday picnic at the Dudley Tyler ranch in Colorado Springs to join the Boy Scout Golden Jubilee Jamboree. Cubs meet at 4 pm, bring wieners buns and an extra dish, with games and a Webelos graduation ceremony after the meal. Fiftieth anniversary awards will be presented.
The Pioneer Society announces arrival of a 285 page history book at Ed Adam residence 404 West Fifth. Three hundred copies printed, funds go to historical items. Books cost 10 dollars plus possible mailing charges. Includes pictures of old timers and early day scenes. cover drawn by Mrs. Mabel I Olson.
The city council completed the 1960 61 preliminary budget and opens it for public inspection at City Clerk Ted C Busha office. The budget rises slightly from 37 03 to 37 53 with a one mill cut in the general funds and small rises in sewer disposal bond interest city park funds and library. Park levy increases fund swimming pool upgrades including leak prevention and cleaning ease. General fund remains largest covering police fire streets and city services with rates listed for each fund.
Montana fish and game officials urge sportsmen to file by July 31 for antelope, moose, sheep and goat licenses. About 2,500 applications have been received, well below normal, and postmarked after midnight on deadline day will not be accepted for the August 13 drawing.
State savings bonds sales for June totaled 1 416 618 with six month state total 11 167 893 while county June sales reached 3 956 and six month county sales 53 Bond Chairman McDonnell cited over 72 billion dollars in bonds used in 19 years for homes education retirement and related benefits.
A prairie dog control program has operated in Sweet Grass County this past week and will continue through August. Residents with prairie dog issues are urged to report to the county agent’s office. Cooperating agencies include the Montana Livestock Commission in Grass County and the Bureau of Sports Fisheries and Wildlife.
The Westwear Shop in Billings hosted a western style show for the Cow Belles meeting at Red Lodge last Tuesday. Alice Greenough of Red Lodge, a world champion bronc rider and hall of fame member, modeled the Madison Square Garden outfit. 175 Cow Belles from Sweet Grass Stillwater and Carbon counties attended a no host luncheon. The event featured a Gay Nineties program and a film The Nations Meat. Door prizes went to Mabel Beeson Marie Faris and Bill Fraser. Next meeting will be in Sweet Grass county in October.
Fire danger in the Gallatin national forest has risen to unusually high levels with hot weather likely to worsen conditions. The report notes 16 fires this season, five man caused, most occurring in July, and urges strict fire safety for smokers campers and travelers while detailing required permits for brush and debris burning and enhanced patrols and staffing across forests in Montana.
Miss Mary Louise Whitham daughter of Stanley and Mary Whitham of Reed Point wed Dallas J. Redli son of Emory Redli in a Monday afternoon Evangelical United Brethren church ceremony. Rev E J Bott officiated. The couple plan to reside in Reed Point after a honeymoon trip.
Preliminary 1960 counts show Montana total at 660,547 residents up from 591,024 ten years earlier with housing units rising 21 percent. Great Falls remains largest city at 55,246, Billings leads in housing gains, Lodge Grass surges 360.8 percent, and Red Lodge declines while Missoula and Butte show mixed changes. Final tallies expected August to November.
The body of Budd Howard, 44, a Billings grocery executive, was pulled from the Yellowstone River near Carbella bridge after two men spotted it two miles downstream. Howard drowned when a kayak tipped and both he and Walter Cook clung to the craft before being swept toward the east shore. Cook survived, aided by a life jacket, while divers had searched for days. Sheriff Albert Nickelson said the body likely rested in a deep hole before this morning discovery.
Ellis Faw suffered a broken shoulder, scratches, and bruises when a cow knocked him from a 20 foot cliff while driving cattle to summer range on Deer Creek. The cow also fell and was killed.
Sheriff Kenneth Thompson received about 90 civil defense kits from the office of civil and defense mobilization. They are available free on a first come, first served basis and contain booklets on national civil defense plans, radioactive fallout protection, farm soil decontamination, family fallout shelters, first aid, and more with shelter construction drawings.
The Holland family held a Sunday reunion at the H. H. Cook home with numerous relatives visiting from Spokane Ness City Missoula and McLeod. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Downing and two sons Mr. and Mrs. Dobbs and three children Mr. and Mrs. Art Holland and daughter Mrs. Barkley and son Mrs. Ellison and children Mr. and Mrs. Duffey and family Joe Holland and Mr. Cook and two children an aunt Miss Agnes Rapstad and Mrs. Larry McComb and daughter. Downings and Dobbs families planned to depart after a two week visit.
A female grizzly attacked a party of five hikers on a trail north of St Mary Lake in Glacier Park. Three were mauled, including 10 year old Smith Parrat who suffered critical injuries, punctured lung and facial damage. Others, Allen Nelson and Brita Nor ing, were hurt with varying severity. Two hikers, Gate Nyhlen and Ed Mazzer, were uninjured. Kingsley physician reported Nelson’s calf injury and Nor ing’s lower leg and hip injuries.
Ernest Parker and Floyd Perce were delegates from post 19 to the state convention of the American Legion held in Great Falls July 14 to 18. Arthur Saboe of Poplar was installed as department commander. Roy Summerland of Livingston and Pierce, vice commanders of district 7, were listed in Great Falls where temperatures ranged from 96 to 97 degrees.
Paul F. Severance former Big Timber resident died July 13 in the Veterans Hospital Phoenix Arizona after years of declining health. He moved from Bozeman to Youngtown two years ago seeking better climate and had served in World War I. Funeral services were held in Glendale with Youngtown American Legion Post No 62 in charge and interment at Resthaven Park Cemetery. He was born July 4 1887 in Searsmont Maine and survived by his widow two brothers and a sister plus several in laws and a nephew.
The Montana Army National Guard invites Big Timber area men to join or rejoin the National Guard and train with the Harlowton howitzer battery. A National Guard bus will be provided to transport interested locals to drills in Harlowton, with plans to start before September drills. contact Harlowton at 393 to express interest or arrange a meeting.
Two sisters, Mrs Bessie Willson of Kasota and Mrs Albert Prinzing of Great Falls, arrived Friday for a visit at Mrs Margaret Kenison home. A Sunday family reunion drew 25 relatives including Marvin Veen Lyn Kenny Hal Grande Falls and more from Fort Kenison Clydé Park Anaconda and Wilsall. Jim Thompson and partner purchased the former J F Burke house on Fourth Avenue.
