Residents report a Tuesday hail storm in Greycliff and Bridger creek country with stones as large as baseballs. C A Keppler notes extensive damage to crops and dozens of poultry and sheep killed while windows shattered and two foot snow drifts formed. Local elders call it the worst storm in memory.
J H Hall of the Bureau of Agriculture Labor Industry and Publicity writes to the Pioneer stressing the need to obtain views of agricultural and industrial scenes for the Monthly Pamphlet. He notes difficulties in gathering suitable images for advertising purposes.
Sheriff Fallang returned from Big Coulee with Walter Gugler charged with stealing J. C. Farringtons horse. Hearing set for July 31 and bond fixed at 750.00.
The Elks of Montana plan an extensive 1909 convention in Miles City August 3 4 and 5 with record crowds. Visitors from many towns will come by train and be housed in room lists and extra sleeping quarters. Elkville a recreated midwestern town will feature shops saloons courthouses and staged pioneer life with Elk Money passes Good as Gold in Elkville and a large entertainment program including multiple bands. The event aims to set a high water mark for Elk events in Montana with receptions banquets and conventional entertainments.
A report claims the Joseph J. Hopkins ranch west of Melville has been sold to Dudley N. Hart of Melville, partner of Otis I. Godfrey. Hart, a young businessman, is expanding land in the Musselshell valley with a long Musselshell frontage near Twedot to Martinsdale, and operates large scale farming with steam plows.
The Montana state board of health votes to abolish the smallpox quarantine effective January 1, 1910. They argue vaccination provides absolute prevention and reduces county costs by avoiding care for smallpox cases.
Guests from Cody and Billings attend local events. A M W of A dance occurred at Reed on July fifth. Miss Bessie Dunley visited Miss Louise Deeney for two weeks. Mr and Mrs Connolley announce summer in Yellowstone. Farmers report excellent hay crops and the season ends with Ray Flanagan delivering the shearing crew.
L C Bade offers a dairy operation for sale including cows, milk boxes and bottles, ice cream making gear, a freezer and packer. Pasture adjacent to town available for summer. Reason for selling is too many sirens in town.
