Minneapolis July 9 a petition filed in district court seeks to set aside and annul the election of mayor George E Leach alleging violations of the corrupt practices act The petition claims Leach falsely accused his opponent Thomas Van Lear of slighting the American flag and attacking patriotism Leach defeated Van Lear in the recent race
Miles City July 12 Practically the entire business section of Ingomar was wiped out by a fire last night origin believed in the Cox restaurant on Main street. Damages estimated at 150000 with about 50 percent insured. Only two business buildings remain the First National Bank and the post office store.
Reed Smoky Johnson, believed killed after a shooting in Little Crooked, survived a blow from Ed Pugh and later turned himself in at Roy. He is hospitalized with severe head wounds and jailed in Fergus County. The coroner’s jury ruled felonious killing in the Green case and Ed Pugh faced no charges.
The senate agreed to a Friday vote at 3 oclock on the motion to recommit the soldiers bonus bill. Democrats oppose the motion and plan to seek to instruct the finance committee to report the bill back soon. Senator Watson of Georgia and Senator Myers of Montana led opposing arguments amid debate and President Harding discussed the issue with the finance committee.

Washington July 13 The House moved under high pressure as it neared closing debate on the Fordney tariff bill. Representative Green Iowa defended the bill arguing it would not cut American trade. Hawley Oregon urged benefits for farmers citing 80 000 to leave the land in a decade and questioned government interest. Hudleston Alabama charged Republicans with willingness to open the treasury to railroads again.
The Montana Automobile Association was formed with officers elected and a county-representation constitution. A. W. Miles of Livingston named president, C. R. Brazier of Helena secretary to organize and publish a magazine. Executive board includes PRL Wills and the president and vice president.
Helena July 7 Colonel C B Nolan counsel for Frank Conley former warden of the state prison asks the state board of prison commissioners to oversee a full inquiry with a grand jury convened by the attorney general. Governor Dixon continues his private probe via Representative MacDonald and invites any additional inquiry. The prison board, headed by the governor attorney general and secretary of state, will conduct a hearing with location TBD.
Secretary Weeks ordered that honorably discharged veterans and widows or orphans of World War veterans may not be removed from civil service positions if their records show good performance and adequate ability. The American Legion protests prompted the policy to protect veterans during reductions in government forces.
