Residents praise the oiling project in Big Timber as a major, long awaited improvement with detours accepted. Petitions circulate for oiling more streets at a remarkably low cost, with City Clerk Ted C. Busha and council members inviting property owners to participate.
Guests of Aldens Mr and Mrs George Alden include three daughters with families this week. The Robinsons from Huntington Park California bring son Johnnie and daughter Margaret, the Moraville family from Sterling Colorado bring Jane and Joan, and the Chapins from Harlowton bring Alta Jean.
The remains of Pvt. Francis E. Titeca son of Mrs Mary J Titeca Shawmut will arrive in Big Timber Friday under the repatriation of World War II dead program. He will be accompanied by SSgt George D Huntzinger of the Sixth Army escort detachment from Ogden Utah. Military graveside honors are planned Monday afternoon with the American Legion in charge and services at St Josephs Catholic church.
Isaac Jacob Lay 83 longtime Bridger Creek resident died Tuesday at his home after illness. Funeral services were to be conducted at 2 PM at the Big Timber Evangelical United Brethren Church. Born December 18, 1865, he traced a Montana journey from Bozeman to Bridger Creek with his family. He is survived by his widow, a daughter Mrs. Henry Hausserman, and a son William.
Five Sweet Grass county high school juniors have been selected for the Montana American Legion's second annual Boys State, Aug. 15 through 24 at Dillon's Montana State Normal College campus. They join 300-plus peers for a 10 day citizenship training course led by Eugene W. Savage and staff. Highlights include a new law school, visual training in government, expanded procedures, trips to Bannack, and the first annual governor's ball on Aug. 23.
Ellihu and Peter Rose of New York promoting Big Timber on an ABC broadcast with Mayor Kenneally and notables. They hailed the town as the center of the dude ranching business and the most beautifully located in the world. The pair and two guests were hosted in Chicago before boarding the North Coast Limited to Big Timber.
Mr and Mrs Johan Edland and sons of Cooperstown North Dakota made a surprise visit to the home of Mr and Mrs Peter Berland Tuesday afternoon Edland came to this country from Norway on the same ship as the Berlands 34 years ago
Ned Kennedy and Cecil Cary of Tacoma on return from a cross country horseback trip with a car and horse trailer. They covered 3500 miles in 265 days and filmed the journey including scenes at the capitol with President Truman and congressmen. They plan an outside show at E2's Inn Saturday night at 9 o clock inviting all interested.
Judge B E Berg presided yesterday over multiple probate matters including second account approval for Wesley P Franklin estate and final discharge for George O Mosby. Orders to sell Mary Edna Mitchell estate real property, discharge Rostad special administration, and reappraisement for Daisy E Scyphers. Marvin Ray Peterson and Betty Arlene Peterson adopted by Oscar Stephens and take surname Stephens.
The 30,000 ton battleship New York will be subjected to a test of the navy’s radar guided bat bombs off Pearl Harbor. The mission includes air, surface and underwater tests with the aim of sinking the ship, which remains radioactive from Bikini tests. The bats are 1000 pound guided bombs with wings and tail controlled by radar.
The Boy Scouts will conduct another paper drive Monday evening. Residents are urged to have their paper on the curb that day or if they need help tying or carrying it out contact C. V. Schuler at the Oie Motor Co. or H. H. McIntyre at the Ford garage before that evening.
Funeral services for Herman T. Flemming pioneer Bridger creek resident were held at the Evangelical church in Reed Point with Rev. H S Tool officiating. He died Monday after a stroke and had been ill for some time, with three months in Community hospital. Interment was in Reed Point cemetery. surviving are his widow, a son H J Flemming of Bridger creek, and a grandson.
Scott Hoskinson reports the community cannery will open around July 21 for the summer season. The facility gains a steam jacketed kettle from the war surplus administration, two retorts 105 and 55 quarts, two new exhaust boxes and two sealers from the state department of education at no cost. About 20,000 cans are on hand and processing should speed up with the new gear.
Three motorists faced DUI charges in the past week. Edward A. Rands of Columbus forfeited a $100 bond after arrest on Highway 10 near the McIntyre ranch. James L. Sloan of Thermopolis paid a $100 fine east of Springdale. Both licenses were revoked under the new law. Henry Chester Young of Missoula forfeited a $5 bond after failing to appear in Justice Holly's court for driving without a license. He was arrested near Grey Cliff.
Philadelphia July 7 The American farm bureau federation urged the Democratic party to pledge a new government attack on rising prices. H E Slusher proposed Congress set up a national monetary commission to stabilize prices. Slusher, Missouri farm bureau president, argued democracy requires price stability to survive.
Mrs Melvin Nelson and the boys returned Saturday morning to their home in Columbia Falls after spending a month visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Ole Warp and with Mr Nelsons parents Mr and Mrs Wade Nelson and other relatives and friends
At a Tuesday meeting of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Big Timber the pool project received plans to hire one or two men to finish form work before cement pouring. Donations total about 1500 dollars with 250 remaining for site materials and a bathhouse. Estimated labor cost to finish farm work is 400 dollars, to be raised by local business subscriptions.
Clarence Adelbert Caulkins Sr., longtime Big Timber merchant born in New York, died in Berkeley at 80. He opened The Fair in 1902 and ran it until his 1930 move to California. Survived by wife, two sons Clarence Jr and Charles, daughter Jessica Moore, and four grandchildren. Funeral held June 28 in Oakland with Dr. Vere W. Loper officiating.
Montana fish and game officials urged the public not to pick up young deer found along roads or fields. A week-old fawn found by an Armour & Co. salesman between Helena and Butte was taken in and given to a game warden. Biologists cautioned that mothers may abandon fawns if humans handle them, even when returned to the spot.
Lawrence Chapel named top all around cowboy at the sixth annual Junior Chamber of Commerce Ranch Hand rodeo in Livingston. He earned a Stetson hat after three days of events including saddle bronc bareback bull dogging and calf roping. Wally Overfelt won wild cow milking. George Morey led quarter horse and cutting contests with Langston multiple top finishes. Bob Hart helped announce the three day show.
Mrs Jerry McCormick and her infant son have returned home from New York state, sharing news of the trip and family greetings upon arrival.
Heywood Daly observed a buck antelope near his ranch last week as it repeatedly tried to jump a woven wire fence. It finally caught a horn in the wire, broke its neck, and Daly turned the animal over to the sheriff for disposition by Deputy Game Warden J F Burke.
The Boulder Valley Womans Club met July 1 at Mrs. Wright Ewan’s home with 11 members and one guest. Members answered roll call with their pet peeves. A report on the county federation meeting and on the club quilt queen and framing of the service flag was given. A community picnic is set for Aug. 5 on East Boulder, inviting members to bring lunch. Next meeting is Aug. 5 at Mrs. Branson Miles’ home with lunch by the odds.
