George M. Hatch Dies In Lethbridge at 77 Pioneer Resident of Eastern Montana
George M. Hatch died at his daughter Eda Hatch Lewis home in Lethbridge Alberta at age 77. A pioneer of eastern Montana he shipped the first sheep from Glendive to Chicago in 1881 and helped found Big Timber’s business district. He served as Park County commissioner and later state senator influencing Sweet Grass and Carbon county creation. He also served as under sheriff and later mayor in Canada. His brothers O M Hatch Morton W Hatch Arthur G Hatch and Benton Hatch predeceased him.

John B Morris Early Day Settler Dies After Long Illness
John B. Morris longtime Big Timber resident and early day settler died Tuesday evening in Forsythe hospital after a prolonged heart illness. Funeral at Patterson chapel 2:30 tomorrow with Rev. W. P. Eastman in charge. Interment Mountain View beside his wife who died in 1918 and son Alfonso in 1940. He was born June 1 1882 in Quincy and homesteaded through Montana after 1873 journey westward. Twenty one children, grandchildren, and great grandchild listed among survivors across several Montana and Washington towns. Known for jovial nature and wide acquaintance locally.

The state penitentiary reported 462 prisoners at June 30 1928 with a 45 inmate two year gain. Parolees totaled 461 with 23 returned for violations. Most work in shop rooms and kitchens while costs run 95 cents daily per inmate.

Nearly 30 Livingston residents and guests gathered at the Ftks temple to honor Scotland’s poet Robert Burns on the 17th anniversary of his birth. Rev. Alexander P. Alten presided, introducing entertainments and displaying Burns images, as Alfred Atkinson of Montana State College spoke on Scotland’s past and present, including estate breakups and taxation. He recalled the Ayr Bridge and Burns’s Two Brigs while praising Cotter’s Saturday Night as a great poem.
