Following Sheep Trails in Idaho Early Morning Journey

Richard Liquin recounts a family trek trailing sheep with his uncle Ray Esp and aunt Rita. The group left at dawn from Grey Cliff Montana to cross the Yellowstone River bridge and move stock to Deadran Canyon, facing prickly cacti and a long night return.

Roemer Honored At Bozeman Dinner

Mr and Mrs Alban A Roemer and Mr and Mrs George Breitmeier were guests of Gallatin national forest personnel at a Baxter hotel dinner in Bozeman last Saturday. Over eighty forest personnel and retirees attended while Roemer plans to retire in March after more than thirty years with the service including twelve on the Big Timber district starting in 1945. Donald E Niven will succeed Roemer as Big Timber district ranger. Niven previously headed the Gallatin forest transportation planning project and has held several ranger and assistant roles in Montana forests.

Tourney Tickets On Sale Feb 5 In Billings

The Southern Division basketball tournament in Billings opens advance seat sales Feb 5 and runs through Feb 14. Fans may buy bleacher or floor reserved seats at Big Timber section at the high school office, then at Stockman in Billings until game time.

Big Timber Gets Modern GMC Fire Truck To Improve Insurance Rates

Big Timber received a new GMC fire truck delivered Monday and tested by fire underwriters Wednesday. The apparatus, modern and fully equipped, offers 750 gallons per minute capacity, up from 500, with costs estimated at 12 000 to 13 000 dollars. Mayor Boe anticipates a shift from class 1 to class 6 insurance rates, replacing the 1932 26 year old unit bought for 1600 dollars.

Appeal to Supreme Court in Montana traffic crash case

Mrs. Frances Strobel of near Big Timber asked the State Supreme Court to move the trial of a damage suit from Sweet Grass county. The suit stemmed from a 1953 oil tanker collision that killed Gerald C. Little in Laurel. She also appeals a prior venue ruling in another related case.

Lones Wigger Jr. of Montana State college Bozeman won the 100 shot offhand Schutzen at Big Timber Rifle and Pistol club with 951 points the highest Schutzen score in Montana. Old Big Timber Grade School Bell Saved by Alumni Effort

Senator Ronald McDonnell and Bluford Bly spearhead a plan to preserve the 1880 bell from the old Big Timber grade school. Alumni contribute 25 cents to 1 dollar for a copper plaque and a stout structure on the school site, with names listed in the archives and bell tolled on special occasions.

Students Tested For Tuberculosis In Montana coast program

Under the Montana Tuberculosis Association, 178 Sweet Grass County high school students and 277 Big Timber grade students were tested for TB on Monday. Drs Baskett Standish Claiborn and DeBelly conducted the tests, to be read Thursday. Positive cases will receive chest X rays and contact tests. negative results will receive notices.

Prathers Take Over Ellingson Store in Local Deal

Mr and Mrs Ralph Prather have purchased the O J Ellingson Co store at Mc Leod and Second Ave and will run it as a separate business from the Ben Franklin store. The store opens after remodeling. Ellingson location has housed the business since 1917, first as the Motor Inn then as an appliance and gift shop.

Body recovered from Boulder river near Abarr ranch bridge

The body of Phillip Powell aged 37 was found wedged beneath river ice about 200 yards below the Abarr ranch bridge near McLeod. Powell had worked at the Abarr ranch and was reported missing Sunday night. Sheriff’s deputies and volunteers located the body with a grappling hook after tracking Powell’s movements in a field and toward the ice. Powell, a World War II veteran born December 10, 1920 in Eagle Butte, SD, leaves parents and siblings in a large list of survivors. Funeral arrangements were to be held in Billings.

Adults Attend City Classes With Large Turnout

The high school hosted two adult education sessions drawing 60 participants, 42 men and 18 women. Men learned about feeds and additives led by Dr. O O Thomas. women studied wild game cooking led by Mary Loughead with tastings. A future session on fertilizer economics is planned for February 4 with Jesse Green. A lamb cookery film and discussion follow for women while a talk on wild game care is addressed by Game Warden John F Burke.
