The Pioneer announces a new delivery and printing timetable. The future edition will go to the post office Thursday morning, with printing shifted to Wednesday afternoon and evening. News items and display ads should be submitted a day earlier. the absolute deadline for display ads is Tuesday noon.
A humorous memoir fragment by a self-deprecating craftsman recounts mishaps from failed carpentry. He jokes about poor skills, delayed projects, and the paradox of becoming a better cook than carpenter while awaiting a fresh snowfall.
The adult education class held its second meeting at the high school Tuesday night. Miss Jill Burleigh led the women’s class while the men met in the lunch room to discuss keeping farm records. A January 21 meeting will cover farm credit with loan representatives attending. Ladies will meet in home economics room for a meat cutting demonstration.
Ray Collins, Jr. A. R. Collins, Jr. principal, received the Distinguished Service Award at the ninth annual Jaycee DSA banquet. Other honorees included Morris Tronrud Jr. outstanding young farmer. F B Peterson special award. E A Bieber boss of the year. Speakers included Forest Henderson, former state JC leader, who urged leadership and civic cooperation.
The Legionnaires jumped to a 33-12 first quarter lead and won 80-55 over Bell Telephone of Billings. Twelve players scored for Big Timber with Dodds leading at 15 points and Roberts top-scoring for the visitors with 22.
Dudley S. Tyler buys the Bion Roys ranch adjoining his Tyler ranch on the lower Boulder. Foreman Percy Cox and Mrs. Cox will relocate to the Roys house. Tyler acquired his present ranch last November from W. B. Spencer and moved with his family in June.
The Montana Tuberculosis Association has issued consent cards for school wide TB testing in Sweet Grass County. Tests occur at Big Timber High School January 27 and grade school at 1 p.m., with readings January 30. Rural schools test January 31. readings February 3.
Dr. George DeBelly and family moved to Big Timber this week and will set up a home office at 416 East Sixth in the Schallock residence. A native of McGrew Nebraska he is a University of Nebraska graduate and medical college alumnus who recently completed a two year Army stint at Fort Riley Kansas and internship at Anchor Hospital in St Paul.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 43 pints toward a 70 pint quota last Thursday in Big Timber. Donor Mrs Theo Counter qualified for a gallon pin. few rejections were recorded. An October reappearance depends on community response and recruitment efforts by Mrs A R McDonnell and local volunteers.
Melville Lutheran congregation held elections and approved a budget over 3000 for the coming year. Leif Anderson was elected trustee, Victor Tronrud Jr re elected deacon, Kenneth Filare secretary, Carl Thompson treasurer with holdover trustees J G Johnson and Lewis Brannin.
Campaign director Byron Manley announced that over 1000 March of Dimes fund appeal folders have been mailed to residents of Sweet Grass County as the polio drive enters high gear. He stressed the need for funds to sustain patient care and rehabilitation, noting thousands have survived polio and now seek improvements toward near normal lives. Volunteers from Big Timber will tally returns at month end for Mrs Lloyd Severance.
A five day Evangelical Lutheran church PTR conference will be held February 16 to 20 in the Billings circuit area. Rev. Conrad M. Thompson of Minneapolis will keynote at Big Timber Lutheran church. Committees include planning chair H Ben Tetlie and members Keith Harlan, Mike Breck, Roy Mahlum, and others handling prayer publicity and youth.
Fire chief Mc Lean Clark says a new, latest design fire truck is scheduled for delivery in the latter part of the month. The local volunteer department helps fund part of the purchase.
Twenty eight have enrolled in the Montana hunters safety program run by the Big Timber Rifle and Pistol club. The course, required for big game licenses for anyone under 17, welcomes ages 11 to 17, with licenses issued to 12 to 17 after completion. The first class is Jan 30 at 8 p.m. at the indoor range. contact Dorothy Traver at the Sweet Grass Abstract office to join.
Herman Utermohle aged ninety and Harry Hart aged ninety four gathered with friends at Ann’s Boulder Cafe for a dinner party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Utermohle. The pair, close friends for over fifty years, later hosted an informal open house with about 50 guests and cookies and coffee served.
Don Voges son of Mr and Mrs Donald Voges wed Lois Younkers daughter of Mr and Mrs Jack Younkers in a Zion Lutheran church Glendive ceremony. Bill Voges served as best man. Lois works as secretary for Glendive high school principal, Don works for Lowe Construction Co and has enrolled at Montana Eastern College of Education this winter quarter.
The Sheepherders toppled the undefeated Red Lodge Redskins 70 to 42 in a Saturday night win avenging an earlier loss to Lodge Grass. Ronneberg led with 17 points, Miller and Moulden each added 13, and Voges 13 as Big Timber maintains third place in the conference standings.
Charles E Crum 78 prominent Melville rancher died at his Sweet Grass ranch after years of poor health and strokes. Funeral today at 2 p.m. in Lowry Chapel with Rev. Helmuth Fichtler. interment Mountain View. Born August 1 1879 near LaHarpe Ill he married Catherine Bradshaw in 1901. They moved to Sweet Grass County in 1917 and ran the east Melville ranch. Survivors include widow two sons four daughters a brother sister 21 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Tom Holland age 82 longtime West Boulder settler died Saturday in Memorial hospital Livingston after extended illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Livingston with burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Born October 26 1875 in Helleland Norway he came to the United States at 17 and lived on the West Boulder Johnson ranch for 40 years. He moved to Livingston about 17 years ago and is survived by two sisters in Norway Mrs Olave Ramsland and Mrs Elizabeth Holand and several nieces and nephews in the U S and Norway.
The Big Timber Lions grade school basketball team defeated Livingston 28 to 22 at Livingston on Saturday. Huyser led with 18 points and Christ added 6 while Brigsby and Spooner scored 8 and 6 for Livingston. Next game is January 18 at home versus Columbus.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray Woeppel announce the birth of daughter Sarah Lillian on January 11 at Wheatland Memorial Hospital in Harlowton. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dan Laubach.
At the annual meeting of the Big Timber Building and Loan Assn. H L Brockway and Will Churchill were elected directors for three year terms. Churchill is the new president, C E Smart the vice president, Harold Boe secretary treasurer, and S H Solberg assistant secretary. The association paid dividends of $16 542 71 to stockholders in 1957.
Stockholders elected Charles McDonnell Dr D Claiborn Leif Anderson Elmer Arneson Carl Bue A Ronald Mac Donnell and Jim Schneider to the Citizens Bank and Trust Co board. Dr D Claiborn was named president Charles McDonnell vice president and J M Schneider cashier. Surplus rose from 50000 to 70000.
