A large turnout attended three grade school meetings last week. Debate centered on adding four or six classrooms with projectable costs. Four rooms would start around $70,000 plus three teachers. six rooms may require more staff unless rooms serve other purposes. The school board cites local education cost at $257 per pupil, well below other districts. The district has sufficient assessed valuation to support either option.
A reader commends the district board for good administration and argues for a six room addition to the grade school to handle growing enrollment. The letter says four rooms may be insufficient later and suggests building all six now to save taxes and future costs.
Al Dunham's Sheepherders returned to the conference with two wins over Columbus 62 38 and Huntley Project 59 42. McLauchlan Smart and Klindt sparked a 20 point first quarter while the defense limited Columbus to 6. A slower second period kept scoring low as Big Timber built an early lead.
The Melville Lutheran congregation adopted a budget of 4850 at its annual meeting. Howard Hanson was elected trustee for three years and Lloyd Rein deacon for two. Other officers include Kenneth Flare secretary Victor Tronrud Jr treasurer Norris Johnson and Carl Anderson auditing. A 38 percent membership rise was noted. The church plans a diamond jubilee next year with an August tentative date. The Melville church is Montana’s oldest Lutheran congregation.
Big Timber Building and Loan association at its annual stock holders meeting re elected C. E. Smart S. H. Charles McDonnell was elected president of the Citizens Bank and Trust Co at a stockholders meeting on Tuesday. He succeeds the late Dr D Claiborn who had served since 1931. Elmer Arneson becomes president and J M Schneider advances to cashier with James Long as assistant cashier. Directors elected include Carl Bue Leif Anderson A Ronald McDonnell Chas McDonnell J M Schneider and Elmer Arneson.
The Sheepherders will entertain the Indians from Lodge Grass here Saturday night. Lodge Grass fell from the top conference spot after a loss to Absarokee last week. Forsyth remains unbeaten. Big Timber is third with a 6 2 record.
Joe Widdicombe of McLeod and two hound pups treed a large lion on Green Mountain after a six mile chase last week. He shot the big cat, which weighed 165 pounds and stretched over seven feet. One of the young dogs was badly injured in the encounter.
Greg Lux work unit engineer for the Sweet Grass county soil conservation district was chosen as one of three Montana men to attend a special engineering training school at the USDA center Fort Robinson Nebr The selection honors potential for advanced engineering work though Lux has three years with the district while most attendees have five years of experience The month long course will include men from the Great Plains states.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the Legion hall in Big Timber February 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., announced by Chairman Iane Bristol. She urged donors to give blood to help those in need, noting recent shipments of blood to Bozeman hospitals and praising donors as participants in a humanitarian project.
Virgil Gust was appointed to the Sweet Grass county high school board to replace Ed Adam who resigned after 13 years. Other board members are Dr Ben Olness Lloyd Rein Rasmus Boe Wilbert Johnson Peter Rostad and Grace Carney the county superintendent.
The Big Timber Lions defeated Livingston St Marys 24 to 14 on Saturday evening. Big Timber led all game with quarter margins of 60, 14, and 19 points. Gee and Prather led scoring with 7 and 6 points. Baldwin MacDonald each had 4. Klindt 2. Johnson 1. The Lions also beat the high school freshmen 65 to 60 this week.
Selmer Solberg Bjarne Bjorn dal Tope Strobel Morris Tron rud Jr and Wright Ewan are named to serve on the county fair board by the county commissioners.
Mrs. C. F. Ullman 74 died last Thursday at Community hospital after failing health. Funeral services were held Monday at First Congregational church with interment at Mountain View. She was born February 26 1886 in Montgomery Minnesota and lived in Rugby North Dakota before moving to Montana. A longtime Red Cross leader in Great Falls and Big Timber she aided county relief and was known for road rescue efforts.
Sweet Grass Community Hospital Inc an publicly owned corporation formed three years ago to run the hospital holds its yearly meeting Monday January 18 at 8 p m in the courthouse courtroom. The meeting includes the yearly report and election of one director with Clive Haas and Stuart Nicholson named by the nominating committee.
The Timber Tops held a weight loss ceremony last Friday noting losses from four to forty-three pounds. Mrs Owen Moore won the weekly trophy for most pounds lost and Mrs Ed Holmberg was named queen of the Crazy Tops Melville. The installation ceremony featured readings by Mrs Holmberg, a duet by Mrs Louis Taylor and Mrs Donald Pullman, and an original song by Floyd Crockett. A January 15 membership drive party was planned with attendees wearing their original weighed dresses and a low calorie lunch provided by Mrs Henry Eigen and Mrs Crockett.
William R. Beam of Billings will deliver the principal address at the annual DSA banquet at the Legion hall next Wednesday evening. Beam, a 1939 LSU graduate and Northern Pacific oil development employee, has long directed community work, serving as PTA president, Yellowstone county cancer society chair, and school bond drive finance chairman.
Funeral services for Jake Plaggerman, 71, longtime Sweet Grass County resident, were held Monday at Big Timber Lutheran Church. He died Thursday at Community Hospital from peritonitis after a week in the hospital. he had be en in poor health for months. Rev. Ocee Johnson led the service with music by local singers and organist E. O. Overland.
The Sweet Grass county soil conservation district schedules its annual meeting for January 21 at 8 p m at the American Legion hall. Frank Dunkle of the state fish and game commission will speak. music by Woolley’s high school band and a vocal number by the school chorus. Four supervisors will be elected for terms of two three two and one years. Door prizes donated by local businesses will be drawn during the evening and lunch served after the meeting.
Cosgriff pleaded not guilty in injustice court to a charge of possession of beer by a minor. He was found guilty Tuesday and fined $50. His attorney Claude C. Gray said the case would be appealed to district court. Jurors included H. A. Anderson Virgil Gust Mrs. Clarence Erickson Norman Starr John Jacobs and Albert Rostad.
In District Court Vie Gee sues Leo J. Cremer Jr. for repayment of a loan of 16888.22 plus six percent interest and costs. Johnny Ray Nelson pleads guilty to burglary and faces sentencing January 20. James A Stephens Oscar A Stephens sue Walter Ferguson for 4780 for loss of work 550 for loss of use of wrecker and 1750 for loss of wrecker stemming from a highway accident over a year ago.
Snow surveys taken around January 1 show below average snow packs across major basins. In Montana’s upper Missouri and Columbia basins snow cover runs 74 percent of last year and between 55 and 61 percent of the January first average. Eastern basins vary from 25 to 88 percent of last year with many well below average. western basins show mixed readings around 71 to 106 percent of the prior norms.
The county-wide 4H recognition day, postponed by the November storm, will be held Friday Jan 22 at 7 pm at the American Legion hall. All 4H members and families are invited. County awards will honor outstanding club work, Lions Club plaque goes to the best all around club. Donna Wilson and Russell Pepper of Wilsanl will present their blue ribbon demonstration “Its Date.” Refreshments and square dancing will close the event.
Clark scored 13, Huyser 12, and Hauge 10 to lead Big Timber B over Columbus B 41 to 24. Beley 3, Berg 2, Branne 1 added to the scoring as all players saw action while Aber led Columbus with 7.
Richard W Nevin arrived from Phoenix Arizona in the latter part of the week to be with family after the death of his stepfather Jake Plaggerman.
Ben B. Miles II a longtime Montana politician and rancher died at his Opportunity Washington home after a December stroke. Born 1869 in Kirksville Missouri he homesteaded on Crow reserve then settled near McLeod and Boulder earning the nickname Sage of Sweet Grass. He served four terms as Sweet Grass county representative and leaves four sons and two daughters.
An open public meeting on January 23 at 8 p.m. at the American Legion hall will explain the veterans pension act of 1959 set to take effect July 1, 1960. Floyd Pierce leads the local Legion post with a panel including J Lloyd Wignall and other officials to discuss new benefits for World War II and Korean veterans widows and children and the income computation for veterans. Lunch will follow the forum style session.
Elizabeth Steensland of Big Timber and Judith Udin of Fairfield have been named student counselors in the women’s residence hall at Montana College of Education. Dean Carol Sauifers announced the appointments as Roth students are honor students. Steensland is active in the Student Education Association and will be state president next year. Udin has served as secretary of the women’s residence hall council and has been active in the Associated Women Students.
A son named Randolph Craig weighing eight pounds five ounces was born on January 9 at Community Hospital to Mr and Mrs Lloyd I Neste.
