J M Lyons of Norton and Lyons, large county wool growers, plans to exit sheep farming or shift to cattle. They recently sold 1650 wethers at 3.50, contracted 2800 ewes at 3.75, and own about 10 000 acres of grazing land. If they do not sell, 1000 acres will be plowed for feed while remaining stock is managed.
Attorney General advises Lewis and Clarke county assessors that improvements on non taxable land must be assessed as real estate under section 3 696 of the political code. Though other states treat such improvements as personal property for taxation, Montana law requires real estate assessment and tax collection procedures for lands and improvements exempt from tax.
Arrangements are made for a grand charity ball to be held in late March or early April. The committee includes Mmes. W A Moore Skillman J A Hall Mr Kellogg and Dr W A Moore.
State Superintendent W W Welch announced the permanent income fund apportionment totaling 138,906 dollars for 61,736 children, from which Sweet Grass County receives 2,736 dollars. Meagher County Martinsdale district faces exclusion due to district census dispute.
E B Clark of Montana Trading Co lumber department marked his thirty sixth birthday with a surprise gathering at home. About a dozen friends attended, a mantle clock was presented, speeches were given, and a festive meal followed with cigars and music.
