Jim Bourne stayed up late to develop JayCee banquet pictures for engraving but received no credit in The Pioneer. He donated his photography services to the Jay- Dees and hopes future photos include proper credit lines.
Sylvester Steve Watson, brother of R J Watson who sold Big Timber bakery, has become the Pioneer force. He is an experienced printer, WWII veteran with Battle of the Bulge service and combat infantry badge, married with a year-old son Steven. The column notes civic procurement troubles and a $90,000 budget gap for a gym project, urging reader ideas and noting Arlington Indiana and Iowa laws.
The note recalls cold winds 36 to 46 mph and a wish for milder days. Elvin Zeleny from Oakland reports green fields and warm sun, while the writer longs for sunshine and lighter breezes by mid June. The piece ends with reflections on aging and past fishing misadventures.

E Paul Orcutt, extension livestock specialist at Montana State College, urges Montana sheepmen to keep high quality ewe lambs for breeding. He warns Montana sheep numbers are at a record low and restocking is needed. Selling breeding ewes could lead to inferior flocks and harm Montana’s reputation. some fall sales are whiteface ewes at 22 12 cents each.
The Melville Longhorns fell 18 to 23 at Rapelje as Rapelje Independent’s 11th straight win over similar towns continued. Longhorns players included Kermit Anderson Thorvald Anderson Sigurd Lavold Carl Anderson Louis Nelson and Adolph Tronrud Jr who led with 13 points. Rapelje lineup featured Perry Moler and others with T Gee V Gee E Gee Kirchner Hemphill and Hart.
The American Legion team beat Wilsall 45 to 36 as McCauley led with 19 points and Al Deegan 15. In the Midgets game, Legion toppled Sheepherder reserves 68 to 13 with Esp scoring 19, Matches 16, O'Dell 14. They prepare to face Pi Kappa Alpha of Bozeman next, plus girls teams.
The Womans Club held an open meeting at the high school Monday evening with Eastern Montana Normal school speakers. Gloege spoke on Ideals of Education, Cooper on Needs of Education in Montana, and Peterson on Financing Education in Montana.
Royal Neighbors of America Riverview camp 4413 held a brief meeting and a Valentine party at the Fraternity hall. Marie Vaughn chaired as 80 members and guests enjoyed lunch, with Mrs. Clive Haas winning at bridge, Mrs. Herman Fleming at bingo, and Mrs. Collenborn in Chinese checkers. Next meeting February 18 includes initiation for three candidates. officers to practice at 2 PM.
Mrs J F Clark and Miss Helen McAuslan have returned from a month in New York City. Mrs McAuslan came back on Thursday, Mrs Clark did so yesterday. They did not enjoy New York's cold weather and the record storm.
Sweet Grass county residents responded strongly to the March of Dimes drive with $905.92 reported by Chairman Orvin Flare and expected to near $950 before the deadline. The tally breaks down to $147.85 from coin cans $596.76 from mailed cards $65.81 from a basketball game $17.50 from a Grey Cliff dance $68.30 from public school and $9.70 from the high school.
The Sheepherders reserve players helped secure a 36 to 18 win over Absarokee high school. Absarokee’s grade school lost 11 to 12 in a tight finish. Big Timber led 4 to 3 after one, trailed 8 to 12 after three, and failed to score in the final period.
Funeral services for Oliver Albert Myers 64 were held at the Lutheran church with Rev. E E Tollefson officiating. Burial followed at Mountain View beside his wife who died five years ago. Myers born July 21 1883 at Gallatin Gateway moved from Deer Creek to Grey Cliff then. Survived by six daughters including Mrs William Lay and Mrs Ethel Cudney and two sons Arvin and Donald Myers all of Grey Cliff. Arrangements were by Lowrys.
Yesterday Judge B. E. Berg handled probate items including an inheritance tax order for E. A. Davis estate totaling 636.70, final account settlement and final distribution decree, the twenty first annual guardian account for Olaus Liland, guardianship hearing setup for Albert J. Schroeder, a petition for letters of guardianship, and quieting title decrees in Campbell v Wright and Hulin v Fallang.
Mrs Hulda Bailey has substituted as teacher in the grade school for Miss Magda Sundeen who has been away. The note indicates a temporary replacement and ongoing school arrangements.
The Sweet Grass County Woolgrowers Association held its annual meeting at Fraternity Hall with 90 attendees. President D D Johnson presided as Paul Orcutt spoke on sheep industry improvements and officials discussed immigration limits, predator control, water data, and park and railroad involvement.
Fifty-six friends and neighbors gathered at Dallman hall Tuesday evening to honor Mr. and Mrs. Jess Duncan on their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. The program featured solos by Helen Vander Voort and Kay Bryan, a poem read by Mrs. Oscar McLane, and prayers and compositions by Rev. H. S. Tool. A group sang several songs and Evelyn McLane and Joyce Viers read poems. Claude C. Gray presented a silver purse to the couple, and Grant Nielson and family gave silverware.
Lawmen say Leroy Moffett and Ben Sorensen of Billings pleaded guilty to second degree burglary in Columbus and await sentencing. Recovered items include a truck chain set from Crystal Spring Big Timber, nine motor blocks from Braaten and Smart garages, a farm house raid loot including a motor shotgun and sugar. The two were linked to a truck used in the robbery and were arrested in Columbus for scrap iron theft.
Sheriff Walter Osborne reports 14 149 head of cattle inspected in 1947 in Sweet Grass county, down from 18 470 in 1946. Inspections exclude Melville and McLeod as well as cattle shipped direct by rail. Osborne also checked 892 horses, up from 822 the prior year.
The district 5 AAU basketball tournament will be held at the Bozeman armory on February 14 and 15. Independent district teams meeting eligibility rules are invited. Counties include Gallatin Park Sweet Grass Meagher Wheatland Madison Beaverhead. A roster of ten and a $10 entry fee must be filed with Pete Vavich by February 9. The district meet decides entry to the state AAU tournament in Billings February 28-29. Entries go to Pete Vavich Bozeman. No refunds of entrance fees.
