Local notes recount Christmas gatherings across Big Timber with multiple families hosting dinners and visits from relatives. Guests include the Martinsz, O’Learys, and Thornbys, while travels bring the Eddys from Los Angeles and others from Billings, Missoula, and Cody.
Big Timber sets up its first municipal Christmas tree on Central McLeod Street for December 23 1916. Community funds cover stockings for 750 and 350 town children plus 400 guests from outside. The 7 pm program features Béji Bennett's band and a Santa scene with a junior choir. Manager Knowles and local Gilisons receive praise for arrangements.
An elderly Absarokee couple, Earl Schiffer and Addie Schiffer, died within minutes of each other after battling cancer. Earl, 63, and Addie, 71, died at Stillwater Community Hospital in Columbus, both having been hospitalized for months. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cashmore Memorial Chapel with burial in Rosebud Cemetery, Absarokee.
Mr. and Mrs. J. G. McBride of Billings were honored at a home reception by their children Ralph Curtis Lewis Glenn and Mrs. Carl Leader. Married December 19 1905 in Rocky Ford Colorado they moved to Billings in 1927 and have 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Committal rites were performed yesterday at Mountain View Cemetery for 58 year old Ethel J. Lyon wife of Raymond J. Lyon who died December 23 after a long illness in Spokane Washington. Rev Melvin Unruh led funeral services December 27 in Spokane with Rev W F Clingman of the Evangelical United Brethren church presiding here. Pallbearers were A Ronald McDonnell Charles McDonnell John Deegan Walter Steensland Raymond Heem and Ralph Prather. Ethel Lyon was born in Big Timber in 1907 a daughter of Hugh and Mrs Overfelt. She attended the local Creek school and graduated from Big Timber High School. She married Raymond J. Lyon on December 9 1944 in Spokane. Survivors include her husband of Spokane three brothers Leo Overfelt Great Falls Ervin Overfelt Big Timber and Harry Overfelt Ventura Calif a sister Florence Fisher of Spokane and several nieces and nephews.
Christmas morning at Pioneer Home follows with residents filing to breakfast, decorated rooms, and gifts from Jayceens and Moose Women. A large tree donated by Scout groups fills the lounge as carols echo from records loaned by Harold Rue, with staff and family members sharing meals and smiles.
Mrs Ruby Davis died Sunday evening at Sweet Grass Community hospital after a brief illness following a stroke. Funeral services conducted at St. Mark's Episcopal Church with Rev. C J Faas presiding. Interment in Mountain View cemetery. She was born December 1 1895 in Plainfield Wisconsin and lived in Big Timber since 1919. Survivors include her husband Clyde Davis of Big Timber and three nieces.
Sweet Grass county high school alumni from the class of 1961 gathered for a no host dinner at Frye's Cafe with 24 attendees. The group included sponsors, teachers, and several residents from Bozeman Missoula Helena and Walla Walla. After dinner they moved to the Legion Club for dancing and visiting.
Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Mauland hosted Christmas visitors including Mr. and Mrs. Willard Horn and their young son from Heart Butte. Calvin Lavold and family from Billings visited Knute Lavold and Svend Mauland before returning home.
