Washington notes a brief session with the Senate passing the housing bill 66 to 4 and the House sending it to conference. Lawmakers, many heading home, labeled the session a goose egg as Roosevelt bills stalled and only minor adjournment actions occurred.
In Hardin two men from a rubber-tired cattle rustling ring were sentenced by District Judge Guy C. Derry to terms in Deer Lodge prison. Louis Korber 19 of Custer drew two years and Emmett Davisson 32 of Hardin four years after pleading guilty to grand larceny. fellow suspect Guy Gregory 50 of Hardin pleaded not guilty and remained jailed on $2000 bond.
The Republican National Committee named Dr Glenn Frank former University of Wisconsin president to head its new policy forming committee. Chairman John D M Hamilton traveled to Chicago to interview Frank and confirm his chairmanship. The first meeting date remains undecided pending acceptances from all invitees.
Henrietta Wiedman wife of attorney R H Wiedman died suddenly Sunday in Missoula following an operation. Burial is set for Polson Montana this afternoon. She was 32 in 1928 and leaves husband son Jack 16 a mother Mrs Week of Missoula one sister. The Wiedmans moved through Kalispell Winnett Billings to Polson and were prominent here with Mrs Wiedman active in social work and president of the Women’s Club.
Frank B. Kellogg former secretary of state Nobel laureate and coauthor of the Kellogg Briand pact died of bronchial pneumonia following cerebral thrombosis. Funeral set for St John the Evangelist church in St Paul with burial in Washington National Cathedral.
County Treasurer S. C. Bailey outlines the 1938 license plate process for all counties. Applicants present 1937 registration to the assessor, then to the treasurer for tax calculation and payment. Do not request special numbers. Transfers of title go to the Registrar at Deer Lodge. New second hand cars require title from issuing state or notarized bill of sale. Duplicates cost fifty cents. Dealers handled by Deer Lodge. Licenses start January 3, 1938 after holidays.
Reed Point and Grey Cliff readers report Friday delivery delays for the Pioneer with papers arriving late and missed No. 4 mail. Editor announces protests to Congressman OConnor and Civil Service head Harry Mitchell, urging post office to notify the Pioneer of errors and arrange timely delivery.

Chicago Dec 21 Al Capone lost his appeal for a one year reduction of the 11 year sentence for income tax law violation. A United States circuit court sustained a motion to dismiss the appeal from Judge James H Wilkerson. Capone aimed to avoid a year in Cook county jail after Alcatraz term. The jail sentence was on a misdemeanor count.
The Japanese military attache issued a report disputing survivor and official accounts of the Panay sinking on December 12. Major General Kumakichi Harada claims the gunboat was moving at the time and rejects claims that Japanese boats fired on it, while asserting the vessel had been anchored for hours in the Yangtze above Nanking.
All 38 flood-related suits against the Northern Pacific Railway over the 1929 Wibaux flood were dismissed with prejudice on stipulation. Fifteen federal cases above $3,000 each and 23 state-court suits under $3,000 were dropped. plaintiffs sought $182,527.38. Railway paid $2,650 to dismiss and costs were allocated. Three consolidated federal cases for trial in Billings ended with verdicts for the railway, costs awarded totaling $3,163.11.
Fort Peck Montana December 17 A large winter program is planned at the dam project as army engineers say lay offs will reduce government crews and contractors may discharge several hundred workers with no immediate reemployment in sight.
Last rites for Robert Worth Bingham U S ambassador to Great Britain were held in Louisville Kentucky with an Episcopal service and burial at Cave Hill cemetery. About 50 attendees including Bingham family friends representatives of the United States and British governments witnessed the interment. The body was borne by eight army sergeants from Fort Knox and he was buried beside his first wife Eleanor Miller Bingham. Attendees included Sir Ronald Lindsay Marvin H McIntyre Hugh R Wilson and George T Summerlin.
Delegates from about 29 000 Montana labor, farm and WPA workers vote to ask Gov. Roy Ayers to convene a special legislative session to fund relief for needy residents. Resolutions urge public housing loans, WPA wage parity, and prompt highway and road projects across the state.
Herman Merene a 35 year old rancher from Pray was fatally shot by a stray bullet while hunting on Buffalo mountain near Yellowstone. The bullet entered between his ribs and lodged in the abdominal cavity after passing through the river. Several hunters were present and authorities consider the shot accidental with no clear target.
The interstate commerce commission approved tariffs raising freight rates to generate 15 to 20 million dollars annually for railroads. The new rates take effect Monday except for five commodities held until July 20 after a forthcoming hearing on fairness.
Congressional foes of a popular vote on war powers said they were blocked by President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull. A "people's referendum" was proposed by about six senators and Representative Ludlow of Indiana who secured 218 signatures to force House action in January.
Archie E. Olson, 20, of North Wagner died from injuries after a three-car crash on a highway bridge west of Malta Montana. His death raises the state total for the year to 174, ten more than all of 1936.
President Roosevelt reiterates a need to cut federal spending and warns Congress, led by a Democratic majority, to accept responsibility if budget estimates are exceeded. He backs reducing road expenditures and outlines two factors guiding cuts while noting $214 million must be allocated for highway improvements by January 1.
