A nationwide embargo on railroad freight shipments except vital needs was proclaimed to conserve fuel during the coal strike. Parcel post packages are limited to five pounds, and passenger mileage on coal burning trains is reduced 25 percent. Exemptions include food, livestock, fuels, medicines, printing materials, and essential packing and repair parts.
John Maitland pioneer Fergus county rancher died on Thanksgiving after a yearlong illness. Funeral services were held in Lewistown with relatives from the vicinity attending. Maitland, born near Stavanger Norway April 11 1874, came to Big Timber at 21 and later moved to Fergus county then Roy area. He partnered with Nels Anderson in 1896 and engaged in cattle after sheep work. Survived by a sister in Norway aged 90 and numerous nephews and nieces.
The Big Timber Merchants edged the Livingston American Legion club 44 to 43 after a 40-40 tie at regulation. Al Deegan led Big Timber with 23 points while Skogestad had 17 for Livingston. Other notes include Thanksgiving visits and military furloughs among local residents and a divorce granted in district court.
County Treasurer Oscar Forsythe reports fall real estate collections near the top of four year totals with 135,128.93 paid of 198,382.02 due by November 30. Delinquency on first half taxes stands at 0.0283 percent while personal property delinquency reached 0.1167 percent. Personal property payments amount to 11,338.65 of 12,836.70 due with 954.15 assessed for predatory animal control, 779.15 collected, leaving a 1834 percent delinquency.

Sister Kenny tag day planned Dec 7 in Big Timber and nearby towns to aid polio efforts.

Mr and Mrs O J Ellingson returned to Billings on a plane from a three week Florida journey attending a Shrine convention. They traveled via Tampa St Petersburg Miami Havana and Cuba noting climate sights and a 10 000 registered Eastern Star meeting. They visited Firestone mansion a 1 000 membership club and the Havana capitol with a 16 million cost and 25 year build time.
Federal Judge Goldsborough fines United Mine Workers 3.5 million and John L. Lewis 10 thousand for contempt of court over the nationwide coal strike. Lewis spared jail. bond set for appeal as injunction replaces the prior restraining order. The judge warns of heavier punishment if the strike continues.
The Sheepherders edged Absarokee 24 18 after a scoreless first half and a late fourth quarter rally. Harlan led with 9 points and Gunderson, Peterson key guards while Boettcher rotated the bench. The grade school team beat Absarokee 23 10. next game versus Manhattan at 7 30.
Charles Silvanus McAdams aged 57 died suddenly in Livingston while employed by Miles Lumber. Born May 28 1889 in Bremen Indiana, he lived in Alberta Canada Wisconsin and Montana. Survived by wife Eva, three sons Earl Harley Charles, daughter Elsie Fisher, and one deceased son Jack. Funeral at Pemberton Chapel Saturday at 2 with Mountain View interment.
Miss Emma Cook died in Blue Island Illinois on December 1 after a stroke on November 12. She had moved from Big Timber to Blue Island to live with a niece. Funeral services were held and burial was in St. Boniface cemetery in Chicago. She was born January 23 1868 in Chicago and years earlier ran the Cook hotel in Big Timber. She is survived by a sister Dena LeVert and a brother Phillip Cook who died long ago.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Gifts For The Yanks Who Gave to honor veterans at Christmas. Donations fund purchases of gifts for hospitalized veterans at Fort Harrison and other Montana sites, with items like chess sets writing pads pens toiletries towels and more.
