Teddy Thompson lost 4 pounds in a Park City big buck contest after a coyote tore into his 243 pound deer. The animal carried away about 5 to 6 pounds of meat, leaving Teddy with a 239 pound entry. He and companion Walt Osborne spotted the coyote nearby but did not recover the meat.
Mrs Louise Keppler was honored with an open house at her Grey Cliff home on her 80th birthday. Friends and neighbors visited while a musical program included solo performances and group singing. Born in Germany, she came to the United States, lived in Lake City and Billings, and raised her infant grand nephew in 1939 after her husband Charles Keppler died.
Franklin Grosfield and John Ronneberg shot two six point bull elk in Tom Miner Basin on Sunday. One may qualify for Booney and Crockett club. the large bull measured a 50 inch spread and about 13 inch beam, weighing 600 pounds with potential extra weight if in better condition. Ben Strickland assisted with the extraction.
A. C. McDonald announced near completion of plans for Lions Club charter night. Armand Jahr, former principal and charter member now in Bremerton Washington, is invited and set to speak. The Legion hall banquet begins Friday at 7. Legion Auxiliary serves beef and fish with a 30 year service theme and musical acts.
Two armed men robbed the Denver Tramway Co. office seeking a transportation solution. They took $97 in cash and 9 086 bus tokens valued at $1 363, a haul that concreteedly addressed their transport needs for years.
Col Wallis Huidekoper spoke to a Cub Scout pack on The American Flag at Dugout Friday night. Awards were presented by Cubmaster Ralph Prather including registration cards list, one and two year pins, three year pin, and Gold and Silver Arrows for several scouts. Three short films preceded refreshments.
Mr and Mrs Al Strickland observed their golden wedding on Sunday November 27 at their Third avenue East home. Guests were served from a table adorned with golden tapers and a large wedding cake with a miniature bride and groom. The couple received about 60 cards and 90 visits from friends. The celebration featured a cake by Mrs Tom Huxtable of Lewistown and yellow chrysanthemum corsages for the bride. Waretta Caverly and Albert Warfield Strickland wed in Brooklyn on November 29 1905.
Mr and Mrs Gordon Clark of Williams Minnesota announce the engagement of their daughter Carol to Lawrence C Clark son of Dr and Mrs W E Clark of Los Angeles Miss Clark is a graduate of Bemidji State Teachers College and taught in Big Timber Minn last year Mr Clark is a graduate of the University of Southern California and works for Prudential Life Insurance Co The wedding is planned for the latter part of February.
A meeting for all interested in first aid and civil defense will be held at Sweet Grass County High School ag shop on Monday December 5 at 8 p m. Carl Idland, county first aid chairman, will discuss plans for standard first aid and civil defense courses.
The Todd family held its 32nd annual reunion and Thanksgiving dinner at Bridger Creek School with 50 attendees. Honored guests were Mr. and Mrs. Pleun Roobol of Reed Point, and four generations were represented, including eleven of Mrs. Roobel’s great grandchildren.
A regional Democratic conference for Park Madison Sweet Grass and Gallatin Counties is scheduled in Bozeman on Wednesday Dec 7 at the Labor Temple 422 East Mendenhall starting at 8 PM. Mrs Cleo Butler chairs the Gallatin County group and State Chairman Jack Toole will outline plans from the Chicago national meeting. Carl Lehrkind Jr will serve as host chairman.
Conrad Kaufman a former Boulder rancher died at a Billings hospital yesterday afternoon from a heart attack. Born in Russia on September 23 1904 he came to the United States in 1913 and lived in Billings before moving to Silesia in 1952. He leaves his wife Amelia Kessel three sons Ralph Roy and George of Silesia two daughters Kathleen of Silesia and Mrs George Bangert of Laurel five brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be held at the German Congregational Church at 1 30 p m Monday.
Ken Davenport announces the sale of Davenport Motor Sales to Norman Starr of Glen dive. Starr takes over this morning and keeps the current crew. Mrs. Starr will join when housing is found. Davenport plans a new Ford Mercury agency in Laurel around early March.
Borddie Green of Melville won last week’s Mystery Photo by identifying it as Kermit Anderson Ranch. Fifty three participants, mostly Melville residents, submitted names some incorrect like Harry Plaggemeyer and Lloyd Rein. Solberg’s store awards Borddie five dollars in merchandise and Kermit’s enlargement. all correct entries enter a jackpot drawing.
Postmaster Harold McLauchlan notes a steady rise in Christmas cards and parcels. He urges mailing gifts to distant points before December 5 and nearby destinations by December 10 as part of the 1955 Mail Early for Christmas campaign. He advises secure wrapping, legible addresses, large parcel limits, corrugated cartons, ample padding, and including both return and recipient addresses inside the package.
Ministers from five Protestant churches met at the Congregational study to promote greater Christmas morning attendance. Advertising and billboards will highlight the Christmas message. They discussed scheduling Sunday school programs to allow grandparents and friends to attend at other churches, and New Year’s observances. A New Year’s Eve service at the Lutheran church was planned with others sharing in the event. Attendees included Wm. A. Hood J. G. Sealey J. D. Lindley Harold McLauchlan and Brentwood Barker.
County Agent F. B. Peterson stresses rural residents' role in Safe Driving Day on December 1. He cites National Safety Council data showing about 5,900 of 14,600 farm accident deaths last year involved motor vehicles, mostly off the farm, with Montana open highways seeing many fatalities thus far in 1955. Pedestrian safety is also emphasized as part of accident prevention.
Mrs Mervin Sell will present Christmas season organ music at her home on Fourth Avenue East starting December 17. Wally Schalock installs two loudspeakers this year. She invites requests excluding popular numbers. Last year’s program was well received by Big Timber residents.
Shooters interested in rifle instruction will meet at the indoor range in the gym basement Tuesday December 6 at 7 30 p m. Adults and juniors will be assigned instructors for a six week course. Rifles will be provided if needed.
Two carloads of voting machines arrived in Billings. Clerk and Recorder Chris Rubich said the equipment will be used in elections next year.
Montana counties face limited vaccine supply under a federal program. Nineteen counties accepted allocations totaling 115662 dollars for polio vaccine distribution while Sweet Grass County rejected participation. Officials said only one in ten in the eligible group could be vaccinated.
Appeal to provide personal gifts to about 2,000 Montana State Hospital patients at Warm Springs this Christmas. Mrs. L P Sanders urges merchants clubs and citizens to donate new items or cash for slippers gloves cosmetics and other items. Deadline is December 20 and gifts should be mailed to State Hospital Warm Springs or Louis Wurl.
The Big Timber Sheepherders open conference play against Absarokee after two non conference wins at the Red Lodge jamboree. Reidelbach led Big Timber with 14 and 20 points in the two games while Absarokee relies on veterans Blakely and Marcus. Bray is out sick as the grade school game precedes the varsity at 7 pm.
