State Pays Out Million for Old Age Assistance
Montana officials announce old age assistance totaling 1 110 000 will be paid to aged residents by March 1 1939. The welfare board transferred 271 000 from other funds to cover the shortfall against an 800 000 appropriation. General relief grants totaling 57 500 were approved for 13 counties in November. Also two WPA welfare projects a board comfort and a mattress manufacturing unit will run at Great Falls and Anaconda.

Melvin G. Helwich of Lodge Grass was found guilty of manslaughter in the death of Wade Layton, 19, by a Big Horn county district court jury after seven hours of deliberation. Judge Ben Harwood will pronounce sentence next Thursday at 2 p.m. The elder Helwich had faced a second degree murder charge but entered a guilty plea to manslaughter.

In New York on November 28 1937 Robert Irwin received a 139 year prison sentence for the Easter morning killings of a photographer model her mother and their apartment boarder The verdict was delivered by General Sessions Judge James G Wallace and Irwin was sent to Sing Sing with potential termination of time for good behavior leaving him about 92 years to serve.

Secretary Approves Big Timber Harlowton to Moore Road
Mrs. M. M. Mitchell reports Senator Wheeler and the Bureau of Public Roads chief say the secretary of agriculture has approved adding a Big Timber via Harlowton to Moore road to the Montana federal and highway system. The Montana state highway board plans to issue debenture bonds of 3 million dollars to match a 3 million government grant, with estimated completion cost about 600 thousand.

Mrs. Lillian Volstad was convicted of manslaughter for denying hospital care to her nine year old son Francis who died from a ruptured appendix after she refused medical treatment in the name of divine healing. California Firefronts Lay Heavy Toll Across Southland
Thousands of weary firefighters brought under control a four day series of brush and timber fires in southern California. Damage surpassed 5 million dollars with nearly 800 homes destroyed, mainly summer residences. The Arrowhead Springs hotel of one million dollars was destroyed. Two Vote Margin Holds In Powell County Recount
A county attorney race in Powell County with November 8 results was confirmed by a recount showing Maurice J. MacCormick Democrat elected by a two vote margin. The initial canvass had also showed MacCormick winning by two votes.
Three Million Montana Highway Bond Sale Planned
State Treasurer Ray N. Shannon announced preparations to publish the sale notice for Montana 3 000 000 highway debenture bonds. Voters approved the issue at the November 8 election. The bonds will be advertised for four weeks in Helena and New York City papers, sold late in December, and repaid from the five cent gasoline tax funds to match federal aid.

Lewis and Clark County Loses 132 WPA Workers

Life Sentences Given Two Alcatraz Escapees
In San Francisco on November 26 two long term Alcatraz prisoners were found guilty of first degree murder for killing a guard during a failed escape attempt. A federal court jury added without capital punishment to the verdict and Judge Harold Louderback imposed life terms on James C. Lucas, 26, of Texas, and Rufus Franklin, 24, of Alabama.
