Fisherman Missing Overnight Near Swamp Lake Found Safe
A group from Billings headed to Swamp Lake for a day of fishing. George Pfaff became separated and spent a cold night in a canyon before finding the road and hitching a ride to Big Timber. He reported no injuries and was cared for after the search. The search was led by Under Sheriff Louis Mysse with Otto Stenberg and Olof Hauge assisting. Pfaff works as stockroom foreman at Carpenter Paper Co.

Thomas E. Carey Dies in Spokane Montana Treasurer
Thomas E. Carey, Montana state treasurer since 1940 and former railroad and public service commissioner, was found dead in a Spokane hotel room. An autopsy ruled natural causes. Carey had been in Spokane three days and was 56. He was born in Livingston and lived in Helena since 1920. the Montana vacancy may be filled by appointment until November.

In Denver on August 18 Judge J Foster Symes ordered Tsuruko Wallace 35 to two years and a $1000 fine for conspiracy to commit treason. Her sisters Florence Otani 33 and Billie Tanigoshi 32 received 20 month terms and $1000 fines for aiding two German prisoners escape from a Trinidad Colorado camp. The sisters were convicted of treason charges that carry possible death. The three likely will be sent to Alderson Virginia women’s reformatory within a week.

Helena August 18 More than 15 million yearling fish have been planted in Montana streams and lakes this year and 5 million more will be distributed soon. Elmer Phillips state supervisor of fisheries said the 13 hatcheries produced a normal fish supply with an additional 250000 from the Arlee hatchery. Overall planting this year is well above prior years as fish run larger with many reaching up to 10 inches. The 20 million fish include natives rainbow eastern brook grayling Loch Leven bass and crappies for anglers this year.

Pioneer Martinsdale Merchant Dies
Donald A. Petrie 69 died in a Lewistown hospital from injuries from a fall at his Martinsdale home. Survived by widow two daughters Mrs Clarence Haugan of Missoula Winifred Petrie and two grandsons. A pioneer local merchant he also served as Martinsdale postmaster and lived there 40 years.
