Big Timber Montana hosts one of the largest local rodeos at the Fairgrounds with exciting competition. Photo highlights appear on page 6 and a feature on page 8. The issue notes float pictures scattered through and invites readers to recall the Rodeo Parade.
The 1976 Sweet Grass County Fair runs Aug 12 to 14 with the Sweet Grass Horse Show on Aug 15. Judging begins Aug 12 for 4 H FFA and FHA entries, Fine Arts starts Aug 13, and Friday features the Women’s Club Cake Contest with an 8 15 p.m. cake auction.
Sweet Grass County and Park County commissioners adopt a joint resolution authorizing their attorneys to file a court action to protect the Cooke to Boulder Road. The August 38 1976 dated Livingston Montana document states the move is to defend county road interests and does not address wilderness policy.
The Sweet Grass and Park counties commissioners met in Livingston on August 3 and resolved to preserve the Cooke to Boulder road action after a Forest Service opinion said no valid right of way exists on parts of the Cooke City to Boulder segment. The move aims to uphold a county right of way and maintain potential value for both counties amid wilderness designations.
Sweet Grass County schools announce the first full day on August 30 with bus service operating under County Superintendent Edith Harper. Rural schools gain Alice Howe as Title I teacher at Grey Cliff. further details to be published in The Pioneer.
Drawings for antelope special deer and elk licenses begin Monday August 23 and will run about three nights due to computer loads. Final quotas for these licenses will be set after the Fish and Game Commission meets August 19 and 20. Tentative antelope quotas were about 28 000 with about 45 000 applicants expected. The Sweet Grass County study commission sent its Final Report and Alternative Form of Government to the county commissioners August 1 proposing three ballot options including partisan or nonpartisan elections and districts for commissioners.
Klindt's Pharmacy relocates within Big Timber after 32 years of operation. The new store at 226 McLeod Street features a redecorated interior with white brick foyer and red carpet, a coffee corner, gifts, greeting cards, jewelry, health and cosmetics. An open house with a free gift drawing is planned for Friday.
Carolyn Fraser, daughter of Bill and Mrs. Fraser of Grey Cliff, was introduced as the 1976 Rodeo Queen at the Big Timber Rodeo. She will represent Big Timber in Montana events with Robin Roe named first runner-up and alternate. Fraser was sponsored by the FFA. Roe by the Thespians.
The parade on McLeod Street featured the American Legion band and 20 plus units. Top floats included the Women's Club Bicentennial entry, Fraternal and Civic winner, and 4-H Trailblazers first in class. Individual honors went to Al Rahn, Travis Widdicombe, Margie Robinson, Lonnie Allestad, and Shane Dennis. The farthest travelers were from Hickory Nose, NC.
A Whooping Crane was sighted in a remote Sweet Grass County area over the weekend marking a rare event for the region. Morris Tronrud and Floyd Thomas of the Dept of Fish and Game verified the sighting, drawing national naturalist attention as potential evidence of a long-term breeding presence.
The Overland Golf Club invites area residents to visit the nearly finished course this Friday between 4 and 7 p m to survey progress and ask questions. A non profit is to operate the club with funds staying in Sweet Grass County.
