The Big Timber Sheepherders start drills for the 1961 grid season on Thursday August 24 per Coach Jim Graham. Practices run twice daily through the first week, then follow the regular after school schedule. Uniforms for lettermen seniors and juniors are issued Tuesday August 22 at 10 am and for sophomores and freshmen on Wednesday August 23 at 10 am.
President Kennedy signed a new farm law described as a major step toward a sound agricultural economy. The measure raises price supports in exchange for a 10 percent cut in wheat acreage and extends programs including surplus disposal and school milk, with aims to expand markets and reduce taxpayer burdens.

Frank W. Leamer, 86, died after a fall fracture and long illness. Born in Scott County Iowa to George and Mary Jane Leamer, he spent time in Gardiner with daughter Miss J Josephine Leamer, and was moved to Rest Home on May 27. Funeral services and burial were held in Portersville, California.
Secretary Evert E. Shuey reports Montana Woolgrowers that the National Wool Act will be extended four years with amendments blocked. He notes a near Senate vote and opposition to minimum wages, marketing orders, and lamb provisions, stressing extension without crippling conditions and industry impact.
The Big Timber city council discussed improving the city dump to prevent windblown paper, including burning separated paper in an incinerator and possibly hiring a caretaker. They considered closing the dump at night, enforcing rules with fines, and installing street lights while planning further street improvements.
In Justice Court Gary Printz of Livingston fines totaled for several motorists. Cornelius M. Cremer pays $10 for speeding at night. Mildred R. Kils donk owes $10 for improper passing. Vincent Parker of Payette Idaho is assessed $15 for exceeding the limit. Derrell Johnson is fined $25 for reckless driving.
Mrs Hiner and William Goard were admitted to Community hospital for medical care. A 1948 pickup driven by Lewis L Flanagan was struck by Mildred Rasmussen Kilsdonk on highway 19 north of town. Kilsdonk cited for improper passing with about 300 dollars damage. A collision on highway 10 near Reed Point involved Clinton Becker of Billings hitting Sidney Fraser Jr of Reed Point. Becker cited for basic speed rule with about 200 dollars damage to the Fraser vehicle.
Mrs J A Faw and family hosted two visitors Misses Amy and Linda Faw from Chillicothe Illinois who research Faw genealogy. They traced the Faw line to a 1750 Maryland migrant from Basel Switzerland noting connections to Daniel Boone through sisters. The talks covered Civil War letters and fear of raids with Faw kin fighting kin. The Big Timber Faws now reach the eighth generation of J A Faw’s line.
A four day heat spell saw temperatures reach 103 degrees for three consecutive days and 101 the fourth before a drop to 85 and 83 by Monday and Tuesday. A lengthy rain Sunday aided rangeland and prompted forest service to rethink travel restrictions. Total weekly precipitation was 0.28 inches. Court house readings show varied highs and lows across several dates with 103 and 85 noted.
A Montana State University Bureau report titled Beef Cattle in the Montana Economy Finds the 1957 beef sector generated 162.1 million dollars in gross income with 152.9 million from cattle production. The industry supports about 15,000 jobs and keeps most earnings in state, with 9.2 million added by processing and retail margins.
The Big Timber FFA advocates morning and afternoon breaks for farmers to reduce accidents and boost efficiency. They cite studies showing many farm incidents occur in late morning and mid afternoon and urge tractors to be turned off during breaks. Farm wives should pack snacks and mothers can bring children to the field to observe safe operation.
In California Mrs. John Herries travels to Fresno with her son and daughter in law Mr. and Mrs. David Herries. She accompanies the daughter in law who had stayed with her mother and sister in Miles City and is traveling by car to Fresno.
Wheat growers vote in the ninth consecutive marketing quota referendum to approve or reject quotas on the 1962 crop. Voting locations will be the county ASCS office from 8 am to 7 pm with absentee ballots available. If approved, quotas require two thirds yes to take effect and price support near $2.00 per bushel. if disapproved, no quota limits and price support at 50 percent of parity.
The Big Timber Redlegs defeated the Livingston Cubs 11 to 3 after a scoreless start, racking up 11 hits including a Ben Taylor triple and a Doug Wilson double. Jim Burns allowed two hits with 12 strikeouts in a strong pitching outing. The tourney was postponed by rain and will resume later this week with Big Timber facing Livingston Tigers for a chance at the final.
The Louie Drivdahls report happiness with Dillon after moving from Sweet Grass county. They renamed their Montana Motor Court to Motel M & L, announce a July 24 birth of a grandson named Frank Louis Hazel baker, and praise Dillon’s prettiness and friendly people.
Louise Harper and Chas Favor, both of Phoenix, Arizona, were married Sunday at Hope Lutheran church in Bozeman. The bride’s mother is a niece of John Boe. Gloria Boe, her aunt’s daughter, sang as soloist at the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Owen Loftsgaarden of Power with two sons Alan and Lloyd visited his mother Mrs. Inga Loftsgaarden for several days. They returned to Power where Owen, principal of the Power school, is taking special work at M and C in Bozeman this week.
