Huge Dam Break Floods Michigan Valley Near Flat Rock
DETROIT April 14 Scores of families along the Huron river valley from Flat Rock to Lake Erie were evacuated as the Ford Motor Co dam at Flat Rock burst releasing millions of gallons. The flood covered over 1000 acres with water up to 12 feet deep in places. Troopers guided residents to safety by boat as warnings spread. No deaths reported though many homes below the dam were inundated. The break followed the breach of the New Detroit Edison embankment at French Landing above Flat Rock. The 32 foot high dam's earth and concrete structure lost earth as the river eroded the damaged bank. The Edison plant was set to open May 1 with a $150000 cost.
