A reader skewers the Bureau of Weather for miss forecasts that flip sun and snow across Montana. The piece jokes about weather slips, unclear signals, and noisy radio weather reports while lamenting spring's capricious season and blurred accuracy.

The Sweet Grass County Home Demonstration Council will meet tomorrow at 1 30 p m in the court house. Officers of each Home Demonstration club serve on the council and invited members and former council members are urged to attend.
Dr. H. C. Roquet buys the Wm. Magelssen lots north of Stan's to build a modern veterinary hospital and drug store with a full line of veterinary supplies. Dr. Henry Stokke will be associated with him in the new venture.
At Bozeman during Winter Fair week the Montana Hereford Association elected Sidney Fraser as president replacing Tom Herrin. Grace Renfield was named secretary treasurer to replace Elmer Johnson. Harold Bodley became vice president with a board including Donal Store Wilbur Storey Byron Bayers Walter Higgins Clarence Johnson and Vernon Smiley. Dues set at 25 cents per head. an advertising push for Montana Herefords was planned.
At the regular meeting of School District No. 1 on Wednesday April 3 the board decided to discuss tuition students at a special order of business at 8 p m Saturday April 20 at the grade school Parents and taxpayers are invited and encouraged to attend this meeting and all board meetings in Big Timber
Congregation to break ground for an expansion at the Congregational church after Sunday worship. Members will turn soil on the lot south of the church during the hymn after the sermon. Architect Vernon Drake of Billings approved plans. excavation to start soon with Ben Strickland leading the crew.
Public relations director Rev. Milton Nesvig announced at the Choir of the West concert that Alvin Sylling and his PLC student bride were married last Friday. Nesvig read greetings from Helen Olson, PLC house mother, during the event.
All post offices face cuts as funds run short. Big Timber will close Saturdays and Sundays with mail distribution only from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. Parcel mail via drop after 9:15 a.m. shifts next day. Star routes stay Saturday. Mc Leod Melville Grey Cliff unaffected. Starting April 15 the Big Timber office operates 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. window service only.
Merchants are urged to join Friendship Days on Friday and Saturday April 26 and 27. Lions club plans to have participant lists by April 20 to secure grand prizes. Call Jim Schneider or The Pioneer to sign up by April 20. Door prizes cap at $5. each business contributes $3 toward grand prizes. Two drawings occur. to enter for grand prizes, registrants must make a purchase and be 18 or older.
The 35th Legislative Assembly appropriated 64.61 million dollars for 1957 59 operations, a 33 percent rise from 1955 and 21 million above two year revenue. Education gets 77 percent of the increase. University system gains 16.0 million, with Montana State College 5.435 million and Montana State University 5.08 million. Eastern Montana College rises 173 percent to 1.43 million. Elementary secondary foundation funding grows to 13.5 million. State boards bureaus and departments up 8 percent. elective offices up 31 percent. Welfare sees a 4.5 percent cut. A ten year table shows near 200 percent growth since 1947.
A note from relatives says Bert Kinne is a patient at Memorial hospital in Livingston. He once lived in Big Timber. On furlough, Bob Harper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Harper, visits for two weeks. He recently served at Amarillo AFB and will be transferred to Bunker Hill AFB Indiana.
The Lutheran church hosts a Good Friday service themed The Voices of the Passion with seven youths delivering messages as Judas Peter John Caiaphas The Centurion Pontius Pilate and Dismas. Speakers include Fred Olness Roger Hauge June Strand Cheryll Nevin Sharon Anderson Carol Rein and Olga Kjarma. Special music by junior and senior choirs and the Melville choir. Service begins at 12 00 noon and lasts about three hours.
The First Congregational church wedding joined Miss Nonnie Sue Smith and Wilbur W. Nevin in a 2:30 p.m. ceremony officiated by Rev. E. Brentwood Barker. Guests from Billings, Huntley, Worden and Worden attended as the couple received a reception in the church parlor.
Pliney Zehm, longtime Sweet Grass county resident, died at 5 45 am at Community hospital after a two day illness with pneumonia. Funeral services set for 2 pm Friday at Lowry Chapel with Rev. Paul Seagraves officiating. He is survived by his widow and brothers Henry of Miles City and Art of Loma Linda California.
Mr and Mrs Chas Roripaugh and family will move to Billings around the first of the month. Roripaugh serves as party chief with the Shell Oil seismograph crew here and will be promoted to a supervision position in the main Billings office.
Oisten Bue 73 a Reed Point resident for over fifty years died at Deaconess hospital Billings after several heart attacks since October Funeral services were held at Big Timber Lutheran church Rev Wm Hood officiating Pallbearers included John Boe Hans Omdal Herbert Bue Paul Bue Donald Todd Joe Bare Interment at Mountain View He was born in Egersund Norway March 20 1884 came to the United States in 1906 homesteaded on Work Creek in 1907 purchased the ranch in 1924 and married Freda Helvik in 1925 Survivors include daughter Cora Earp Grangeville Idaho two sons Clarence and Jacob Reed Point two brothers Carl Bue Reed Point Nels Buerskog Egersund a sister Anna Clausen Oslo Norway.
Wheat growers may sign Form MQ-31 at county ASC offices to preserve their 1957 acreage history. Under new rules only those who sign will be considered as having planted their allotment, regardless of underplanting levels. May 1 is deadline. ineligible for farms with new 1957 wheat allotments or excess stored wheat slated for release.
Eight Big Timber FFA members travel to Bozeman for the twenty seventh annual state leadership training conference. Delegates from 64 chapters, led by State President Rand Robin, participate in livestock grains and farm mechanics contests and join the state FFA Band and Chorus performances.
The Sweet Grass Dairy of Big Timber earned a second place for cottage cheese at the Montana Winter Fair. The dairy also earned a favorable milk and cream analysis with fat 3.7 percent, solids not fat 9.15 percent, lactometer 1.0337, cream 39.5 percent, and bacteria counts well below maximums.
Kenneth Elgen won the grand aggregate 1561 defeating Lones Wigger Jr. of Bozeman. Foster of Missoula won the state championship with 1564. Theresa Gaffney of Bozeman led the high lady shooter as Robert Groom placed second in the expert class.
Ralph Prather was chosen Commander of district 7 of the American Legion at the spring gathering in Big Timber. George Horchan of Bozeman became vice commander. Mrs. G R Olmstead of Livingston was elected Auxiliary president, with Mrs. Ralph Prather as first vice president. Vocal selections were by Mrs. Ted C Busha and others during the Auxiliary memorial services. Attendance was strong despite weather, with 131 at the banquet hosted by the Episcopal Guild. the fall meeting will be in Manhattan.
F A Villstedt of Villstedt Kerr Lumber Co Portland says a sawmill planer and logging operation will be set up in Martinsdale employing about 50. He met with the Harlowton Chamber of Commerce to discuss site plans noting log haul from the area to Harlowton is costly and the chamber had offered an industrial site.
The Sweet Grass County Farm Bureau will hold its annual gathering next Wednesday April 17 at the American Legion hall. A potluck dinner starts at 6 30 p m Bud Clem from the state office in Bozeman will attend to share important information on Farm Bureau organization.
Sweet Grass county high school entrants David Haas and Dale Fredrickson won top prizes at the state science fair in Missoula. Haas won third grand prize in chemistry and a $20 award plus a four year honorary Montana Academy of Science membership. Fredrickson won first prize in physics, a blue ribbon, a four year honorary membership, and a light meter. National regional meet in Billings scheduled for April 2027 invites all grand and division winners.
Voters approve a special high school levy by over two to one in Big Timber, with rural areas supporting similarly. Town tally 119 to 54 and county 133 to 87, totaling 252 to 141. J. M. Schneider runs unopposed to retain trustee seat.
The Big Timber Moose lodge hosts Midland Empire Legion No 38 Moose ceremonial on Saturday and Sunday April 13 and 14. Registration opens 2 p.m. Saturday at the Moose Home. A banquet at 6:30 p.m. and enrollment ceremony at 8 p.m. with Lewistown staff, then a 10 p.m. dance by the String Stranglers. Sunday features breakfast, a business meeting and initiation with Billings staff, and a 1 p.m. Dutch lunch for Mooses and ladies.
William J. Nelson 41 of Great Falls faces a second trial in Yellowstone District Court on a first degree burglary charge for the Elliots Inc. break in on January 21 1954. A prior felony allegation could trigger a 10 year minimum if convicted. Nelson had previous verdict reversed by Montana Supreme Court prompting the new trial. Calvin Layold was among jurors.
