Merchant Marine Academy trains fighting officers in wartime
The United States Merchant Marine Cadet Corps trains cadet midshipmen at Kings Point and two other schools for sea duty and war. Cadets participate in every invasion operation, with many earning honors or enduring long lifeboat drills, while some losses and rescues highlight their service. Notable figures include Lovie B Wood Jr and John F Steedley Jr who served at D Day Normandy and Guadalcanal campaigns respectively.
