Retroactive compensation rules for veterans clarified by VA
Veterans may receive retroactive compensation based on three scenarios tied to date of separation and timing of the claim. If filed within a year and disability was severe at separation, pay retroactive to day after separation. If filed within a year but not severe enough at separation, pay retroactive to when evidence shows sever enough to rate. If filed after two years, pay retroactive to the filing date. Separate notice explains no two time limits apply.
