From the State Archives traveling westward along the Union Pacific line FT Sanders was the last reader before Laramie. A 187? railroad guide describes Fort Sanders established June 23 1886 by two companies of the Third U S Infantry under Brevet Lt Colonel Mizner. Post commander Capt E M Coates and Brevet Lt Col J H Frantz. Garrison of Companies C and I of the Fourth U S Infantry. The fort sits three miles from Laramie City beside the track with views along the route. The guide notes Laramie as the Lodge Pole end at the start of the Laramie Division with distances Omaha 573 miles Sacramento 1203 miles. It mentions the old Cheyenne Pass wagon road, an Overland Trail cut, used by freighters more than emigrants. Passenger trains stop 30 minutes for meals, the first eating station west of Cheyenne.
