Flag That Inspired National Anthem 125 Years Ago
The Star Spangled Banner flag from Fort McHenry remains a national relic at the National Museum. Baltimore widow Mary Young Pickersgill sewed the 20 by 43 foot banner with help from her daughter Caroline and help from Baltimore’s Edward Johnson. The flag witnessed the British bombardment as Francis Scott Key wrote the anthem on September 14, 1814 and Baltimore will mark the 125th anniversary in September.
