Oil and Gas Industry The Wyoming Story
D W Greenburg traces Wyoming petroleum from ancient seeps used medicinally to early white discovery by Captain Bonneville in 1833. Emigrants along the Oregon trail reportedly found a spring in Uinta county by 1849 and traders sold axle grease from Poison Spider near Casper in the 1850s. The first producing well was near Lander in 1883, Shannon field in 1889 1890 spurred activity, and Casper hosted the first refinery in 1895.
