In Saigon a crude homemade weapon nicknamed the trashcan rocket was used against river traffic near Saigon. Built in the Mekong Delta by an American-recruited team, the weapon carries a 220 pound warhead and a makeshift tail ring. A recovered rocket was fired July 29 at an American ship, found buried in mud by Navy WO Robert Lutze. The crude craft, about seven feet long, uses a Russian 122mm charge and is aimed at close range, with an estimated maximum range of about a thousand yards.
