County Red Cross Elects Officers At Saco Session

Richard A. Nott was elected chairman of the York County chapter American Red Cross at the annual meeting and dinner. Other officers named include Mrs Helen Merrifield Ralph Blanchard Arthur Hendrick as vice chairmen Mrs George Urban secretary Miss Theresa Colpitts treasurer and three directors Harry Brook Mrs William Bruce and Mrs Lillian McCrillis. Members met with representatives from Bar Mills Eliot Waterboro Kittery Old Orchard Kennebunkport and Saco.

PORTLAND AP The Guy Gannett Broadcasting Services says its new 1619 foot tower on Brown's Hill in Raymond is the world s tallest man made structure rising 2049 feet above sea level and replacing the 314 foot Blackstrap tower as a standby facility The change over occurred at 8 am with no ceremony and a formal dedication is planned for November 19 with Roswell New Mexico s 1610 foot tower as the nearest rival in height.

Long Beach Pumps Fight Subside in Deserted Harbor

Long Beach officials, backed by federal and state partners, inaugurate two new water pumping plants to inject sea water into the Wilmington oil field in a bid to refloat land sinking from subsidence. The project expands pumping to 874 000 barrels daily via 93 wells with plans for 268 wells to reach a million barrels per day, aiming to counter a 26 foot center and a 20 square mile subsidence area that threatens the harbor and naval yard.

Steelworkers Still Signing Pact With Major Firms

The United Steelworkers, buoyed by a small firm deal, press for peace with Big 11 steel makers in a 108 day strike. Granite City Steel Co signed a new labor pact, matching earlier accords with Kaiser and Detroit Steel. Granite City employs 3,250 workers and can produce 1,440,000 tons annually. operation continues under a contract extension.

Fund Drive Total Falls Short of Goal in Biddeford Saco

The Biddeford Saco Community Chest ended with 24360.09 collected or pledged, 85 percent of the 28700 target. Campaign chairman Paul Casavant urged completion of division reports and donations via the Chamber of Commerce at the Journal building. Totals by division are public 7085.19, special gifts 5202.25, large industry 10226, shoes 1022, small industry 2000, professional 3824.65.

Saco Shoe Plant Expands to 100 Workers on Two Shifts

Allied-Saco Shoe in Factory Island is ramping up with 100 local workers and two shifts, producing 65-75 cases daily. Charles Shulman says training on German machines for vulcanizing will boost output, with plans to hire more and move the Lynn office to Saco.

Castro to Lead Search for Missing Major Camilo Cienfuegos

Prime Minister Fidel Castro personally directed the air hunt for Maj. Camilo Cienfuegos who vanished Wednesday on a flight from Camaguey to Havana. Cienfuegos, 28, military commander in Camaguey, disappeared with two companions after taking off at 6 p.m. local time. A broad search was launched, with Castro flying to the Camaguey area aboard his personal plane accompanied by Maj. Hubert Matos’ subordinate forces and Cienfuegos’ brother Osmany. The cabinet session stretched late into Thursday night as authorities pursued clues.

Pasternak To Speak In Chicago

Handicapped Aid Launched by Maine Clinic Teams

Dr. Ella Langer announced at York County Public Health Session that three clinic pilot centers in Maine will pool medical, psychiatric and consultant resources to aid handicapped children. The adolescent clinic began in Portland with Dr. Maurice Ross leading exams for teenage boys. the program serves physically handicapped youths, focusing on cardiac and orthopedic cases.

Teaching Is Becoming Complicated at Western Maine Teachers Convention

Western Maine teachers concluded a two day annual convention with 4000 registered for the meetings. Dr Douglas D Blacksma of Grand Rapids warned that medical advances complicate education for students whose lives were saved. Dr Robert E K Rourke of Kent Connecticut urged closer high school college math cooperation to modernize the curriculum. A split format held part of the convention in Bangor earlier, expanding the audience beyond the former single gathering.
