Americans Kidnapped In Beirut Amid Civil Unrest

Two American Information Agency officials, Charles Gallagher and William Dykes Jr., were kidnapped at a roadblock in Beirut during clashes between Christian and Muslim factions. The men, 44 and 50, were driving in an embassy car when seized. a Lebanese employee was released to report the incident.

CMP Backs Growth Of N Power In Maine

Lewiston AP report: Central Maine Power Co executive Norman J. Temple argues nuclear energy is the answer to Maine's rising electricity demand. He predicts demand will nearly double in 10 years and cites the Wiscasset Yankee plant as cost effective. Temple notes the plant began service in 1972 and has saved CMP customers over $5 million in two months. The Maine Yankee plant supplied about one third of CMP power, with an expected 40 percent in 1975. Damage to windows and property noted elsewhere in coverage.

Beef and Fruit Prices Decline in September

U S consumer prices rose 0.5 percent in September driven by transportation education medical services utilities and clothing while food prices fell 0.2 percent led by fresh beef and produce. The Labor Department reports September CPI at 163.6 versus 100 in 1967 with nine month inflation at 5.1 percent and a 12 month rise of 7.8 percent.

Candidate Deadlines Announced for Saco Kennebunk Elections

The Biddeford Saco Journal sets Oct 28 as the cutoff for candidacy announcements to print in the Journal. A photographer will be at the Journal plant on Alfred Road on Oct 27 and 28 for candidate portraits. After Oct 28, names appear only in a general pre election story before the November 4 election. Letters to the Political Forum must be postmarked by Oct 31.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH Town council set to discuss a dispute between Councilor John Bird and Armand St Hilaire brother of Councilor Paul St Hilaire after a break in incident at the town barn on Smithwheel Road. Police say four youths were seen pushing a car and Bird sprayed a milder chemical into the vehicle. St Hilaire defends his son while Bird seeks a ban on private use of town property. The council meets at Loranger School at 7 30 p.m.
