Deering Fund Seeks Court Nod For Health Center Plan

Trustees of the Lucia Kimball Deering trust in Saco seek a Supreme Court ruling to divert funds from a long unspent endowment to establish a preventive medicine center for local residents. The plan, supported by the council and the trust’s attorney, would use fund interest and potentially federal aid to build and operate the center, with a projected cost of about 190000. The move comes as the will’s terms prove hard to meet amid hospital cost trends. The case will be filed at York County Superior Court and then moved to the state Supreme Court. The council also approved replacing ballot box attendants after 8 pm with set fees for wardens, clerks, and attendants.
