The Most Rev Edward C O Leary has been named bishop of the Portland Diocese announced by Archbishop Jadot in Washington. The Bangor native, 54, had been auxiliary bishop since 1970 and succeeds Peter L Gerety now archbishop of Newark. He praised the pope and Maw residents while confirming his commitment to Maine.
