AUGUSTA AP A report on the cost and utility of a new Piscataqua River Bridge between Kittery and Portsmouth NH will be discussed November 20 by the Legislative Research Committee and representatives of Wilbur Smith & Associates. The study, done with Maine and New Hampshire Highway Commissions, found a high level bridge upstream from the toll span would be cheaper and offer greater user benefits than attached or adjacent bridge options.

Four more candidates for the December 10 Old Orchard Beach municipal election have filed nomination papers. Incumbent Donald C. Jones seeks District 5 councilman and town meeting member. Norman Isley raises papers for town meeting and park commissioner. Daniel Guarino files for District 4 town meeting membership. Paul G. Fontaine seeks District 2 councilman. Already announced are Donald W. Shorey for councilman-at-large and David V. McCallum for District 2 councilman. Voters will elect six councilmen, 50 town meeting members, a park commissioner, two constables, a civil service commissioner, and a superintending school committee member.
Gov. Wesley Powell, bitter after his Republican primary loss, may back Democratic nominee John King in New Hampshire. He has arranged TV and radio time to announce his choice, prompting mixed forecasts on GOP impact ahead of the November election. Powell’s clash with John Pillsbury and intra party quarrels over Styles Bridges’ seat add to a tense political current as Eisenhower comments echo party healing calls. In Washington, President Kennedy signs a tax revision bill offering a $1 billion business incentive and broader changes to reporting and investment credits, with debate over withholding taxes continuing.
Ferdinand W. Demara, famous as the great imposter, will operate a legal boys camp in California. El Dorado County District Attorney Jack Winkler decided not to prosecute after consulting state attorneys. Demara, who has used many identities, runs the New Life youth ranch near Placerville, a licensed operation for problem boys. The camps are owned by Philip Thatcher of Los Angeles. Demara had inquired about licensing for under 16s and briefly kept only two youths placed by juvenile courts.
The Maine State Chamber of Commerce elected Portland businessman Paul B. Christensen as president and announced plans to form a Maine Foreign Trade Council led by Edward Langlois of the Maine Port Authority to expand Maine goods trade. Other officers include Carleton D. Brown, E. Spencer Miller, Fred A. Clough, Galen L. Cole, Paul C. Emerson, and Halsey Smith. The chamber adopted a resolution denouncing Kennedy policies as socialist and backed timberland Allagash-use policy.
Biddeford Mayor Clement H. Deschambault announced he will run for a sixth term in December’s city election. He pledged a vigorous campaign based on his record and future platform, citing the need for steady leadership amid ongoing indictments and political endorsements from local Democratic groups. Deschambault highlighted opposition and support within the party as the race begins, with a Democratic primary effectively deciding the outcome.
The Civil Aeronautics Board probes northern New England air service with today’s witness hearings. New Hampshire and Maine oppose a regional airport plan led by New Hampshire Aeronautics Commission director Crowley, who calls it untried and unproven and urges testing before CAB decision.
