Parish fund drive hits 100000 goal and bells toll

Paul Beaupre and Rev. Edmund Hache announced the St. Andre Parish Progress drive reached its 100000 goal at 11 a.m. with church bells rung to mark the victory. Funds will finance 1962 63 school and church renovations ahead of the parish 65th anniversary in 1964. work continues on school projects with pledges and donations guiding progress through 1963.

Barnett Case Ruling Awaited By US Court

In New Orleans AP report the Justice Department seeks a $100,000 fine against Mississippi Governor Ross Barnett for actions in the James H. Meredith case. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals may rule later this week as panels hear briefs in Atlanta and Montgomery. Contempt findings had been issued against Barnett and Lt. Gov. Paul B. Johnson Jr. with potential penalties of up to $10,000 daily and imprisonment for Barnett and $5,000 daily for Johnson.

McCallum Announces Re election Bid for District Two

David V. McCallum of Ocean Park Road Old Orchard Beach announced today his candidacy for re election as councilman from District Two Half Way section in the December 10 municipal election at the Beach. He said if reelected he would continue serving the Half Way district during a full term.

Soviet Instrument Ships Near U.S. Test Zone in Pacific

Three Soviet instrument ships the Sibir Sudan and Sakhalin reached a Pacific position within about 450 miles of both the U S nuclear test zone and the Soviet rocket shot area observers believed they could monitor rocket and nuclear test activity. An American high altitude test at Johnston Island failed when a Thor N1 missile was destroyed in flight by a range safety officer. The Defense Department placed the vessels roughly 440 miles south of Johnston Island and 360 miles west of the Moscow announced target area. U S patrol planes were likely tracking the ships as Washington expected to observe Moscow rocket firings from inside the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union also announced two zones for long range rocket tests.

US fails to detonate nuclear device over Johnston Island

The United States failed to detonate a sub megaton device during a high altitude test above Johnston Island, due to a malfunction in the Thor booster. The range safety officer destroyed the missile eight minutes after launch, with debris falling harmlessly into the ocean. No nuclear detonation occurred and no danger to island residents. Tests will be rescheduled using Nike Hercules and a specially built booster for lower altitude shots.
